    • A power control adapter, which may be removably threadably disposed within a conventional electric lamp socket, connected to a source of electrical power.     • A triac is turned on during each successive half wave of AC in response to zero-crossing signals which generate a composite ramp voltage, including short sawtooth and long ramp voltages, which provides triggering signals after a predetermined threshold is exceeded. When the composite wave is continuously above the threshold, a zero-crossing switch is activated to bypass the AC signal around the soft turn-on part of the circuit, directly into the gate of the triac, to apply all of the AC power to the load after the soft turn-on has been accomplished. A circuit reset component has an input connected to the zero-crossing detector and its output connected to the generators for discharging the generators to their starting condition any time the AC power wave is interrupted, thus insuring soft turn-on even after momentary power interruptions. A regenerative pulse amplifier and a current amplifier are connected between the threshold detector and the triac for generating a triggering signal pulse for the triac and feeding back part of the threshold breaking pulse back into the threshold detector to reinforce it. The circuit can also perform a servo function by connecting an external signal to the circuit reset switch for limiting the level to which the long ramp generator ramp-shaped voltage wave can grow to below the predetermined threshold level whereby the period of operation of the triac is controlled in response to an applied external signal.

    • An electrical furnace particularly suitable for melting thermoplastic material used in producing glass fibers includes a tank having side walls constructed of a refractory material having an electrical conductivity greater than the material being melted at furnace melting temperature. In order to minimize electrical conduction through the side walls, first and second sets of electrodes are arranged with one set centrally disposed in the tank and the other set surrounding the first. Electric power is applied between the first and second electrodes to generate a potential field with substantially continuous equipotential lines between the second electrodes so as to shield the first electrodes from the side walls. An electrical control circuit limits the current flow between any two electrodes to prevent a runaway condition which might otherwise be caused by the steep negative temperature-resistivity characteristics of the glass. The control circuit includes a circuit which minimizes the DC component from current flow between the electrodes.

    • In a dimmer circuit a summing amplifier combines a light intensity control voltage with a feedback voltage derived from the thyristor controlled ac power supplied to the lamp load. The summing amplifier output establishes the steepness of a ramp signal produced each ac half cycle by a ramp generator. A trigger circuit fires the thyristor device when the ramp signal reaches a certain level. In the feedback circuit a signal transformer coupled from the load is rectified, shaped by filter networks at the rectifier input and output, and used to charge a capacitor via an isolation amplifier. This capacitor provides a feedback voltage which, when summed with the control voltage, achieves a desired functional relationship between control voltage and light intensity, with compensation for load variation. A gapped core inductor is series connected with the ac supply to minimize certain adverse effects associated with turn-on of the thyristor device. Thus, use of the inductor reduces lamp filament vibration and minimizes inductive coupling to adjacent audio and other low level circuits. The inductor core includes both small and large air gaps to provide maximum inductance over a wide range of load current.

    • An electrical circuit for automatically adapting an inductive load to that of one of two possible A.C. supply voltages applied across the circuit. The circuit comprises a capacitor connected in series with the load. The capacitor value is such that a series resonant circuit is formed with the load at a frequency of operation. A controlled semiconductor device having a pair of terminals and a gate terminal is connected with the pair of terminals in parallel across the capacitor. The gate terminal is connected through a non-linear current-voltage characteristic electrical component to one of the terminals of the A.C. supply voltage. For the lower A.C. supply voltage, the capacitor and inductor form a series resonant circuit and at the higher A.C. supply voltage, the controlled semiconductor device short circuits the capacitor.

    • A polyphase digital controller comprised of circuitry to generate and count a group of digital clock pulses with the first pulse being counted after the zero crossing of the primary voltage. The number of pulses in the group is proportional to the control function representing (SCR) silicon controlled rectifiers off time. These clock pulses are counted by an up counter which is used to set an individual down counter in each phase. The up counter operates six times during each 360* of the input line. This setting of the down counters occurs when the primary voltage associated with the individual phase of each counter crosses zero. This zero crossing also starts the down counter associated with that phase, counting a clock frequency that is one-third the frequency of the up counter clock. When the down counter reaches zero it supplies a signal to fire the SCR controlling that phase.
