    • In a satellite navigation system, map data stored in a server is partially updateable. The map data is produced to be divided into a plurality of sets of map data mutually-independent set by set, and stored in the server. The map data is updated every set of the divided map data, according to necessities. Such update operations are addition of a new set of map data, deletion of a certain set of map data, and replacement of a certain set of map data with a new set of map data. The map data is formed into a layered structure composed of data of layers, blocks, and objects. For reloading the map data, it is sufficient that only one or more sets of map data that has been updated are delivered from the server to each terminal. Hence an amount of map data to be downloaded can be reduced.

    • The present invention is directed to a navigation apparatus capable of performing a proper voice guidance even in such a case that signals transmitted from GPS satellites cannot be received, but a current location cannot be judged. The navigation apparatus of the present invention is featured by such a navigation apparatus in which signals transmitted from GPS satellites are received so as to measure a current location, the measured current location is displayed on a screen in connection with a map, a guidance route up to a destination place is set, and a guidance is notified every predetermined guidance point. In this navigation apparatus, when the signals transmitted from the GPS satellites cannot be received, if a current location is located on the guidance route, then a virtual current location is displayed in such a manner that the virtual current location is moved on the guidance route at a predetermined speed, and a guidance is notified every predetermined guidance point.

    • A method and apparatus are provided for calculating potential paths between source and destination locations. First and second map databases are provided that are indicative of roadway networks for geographic regions bounded by region edges and containing source and destination locations. The first and second map databases, are non-adjacent, non-contiguous such that the region edges of the first map database are separate and distinct from region edges of the second map database. Potential paths are calculated through the roadway network of the first map database up to a node or segment at which each potential path intersects a region edge of the first map database, thereby defining a node/edge coordinate. A transition location is obtained in the second map database that geographically corresponds to the node/edge coordinate at which a given potential path intersected the region edge of the first map database. The calculation continues from the transition location through the roadway network of the second map database. The method and apparatus may include organizing the map databases into a map hierarchy to define tiers for the map databases. The calculation process searches potential paths utilizing the tier-one map databases until each potential path intersects a map edge of the tier-one map, databases. Thereafter, the search through potential paths continues automatically based on the lower tier map databases.

    • The method calculates by means of a navigation device an optimized route to a final destination, which is constrained to pass through at least one transition region of a real road network. Each transition region corresponds to a surface region of a stored digital map, which represents the road network with segments having resistances and nodes. The location and extent of each surface region are defined by a user of the navigation device. Relevant segments are stored in a via area list (VAL) in the navigation device. Route segments are optimized in the navigation device by a route-searching algorithm and are stored in route tables. Segment optimizations are executed and results are stored in separate sectional route tables. The overall resistance of the route is minimized under constraint that it passes through the at least one surface region. A navigation apparatus for performing this method is also described.
