    • Reliability of a multi-lug breech bolt is improved by modifying the bearing relationship between the bolt lugs and the matching lugs within a gun receiver. This procedure is applied to a gun that has a receiver housing a breech bolt and an extractor. The extractor is coupled to the breech bolt and configured to move relative thereto. The bolt for this gun has at least five radially extending bolt lugs configured for bearing contact with the receiver when positioned for firing. The bolt lugs include a first, second, and third bolt lug with the first and second bolt lugs being adjacent and defining a gap configured to receive the extractor therebetween. The third bolt lug extends from the bolt opposite the gap. Stress imparted to the first and second bolt lugs from firing the gun is reduced by altering the gun to prevent formation of a bearing relationship between the third bolt lug and the receiver when the bolt lugs are positioned for firing. The gun is reassembled as part of the procedure. The alteration may be accomplished by removing material from the third lug, a corresponding lug of the receiver, or both.

    • A repeating firearm includes a bolt carrier and bolt assembly which are movable relative to each other to provide for locking and unlocking the bolt with respect to the barrel breech. An elongated bearing plate is supported by the bolt and movable with the bolt to maintain a cartridge to be next inserted into the barrel chamber in a predetermined position until the bolt is substantially fully retracted to prevent premature movement of the cartridge upon movement of the bolt carrier only. The bolt carrier and bolt assembly are interconnected by a cam mechanism including a helical cam slot formed in the bolt carrier and a cylindrical pin type cam follower engageably with the bolt. The bolt, cam follower and an elongated firing pin are maintained in assembly with the bolt carrier by a firing pin retainer which is locked in a pin retaining position by a movable member which permits movement of the firing pin retainer at will to release the firing pin for removal from the bolt assembly without complete removal of the pin retainer from the bolt carrier. A bolt lockout pin includes an actuating lever mounted on a support plug which may be reversibly mounted on the stock section for interchanging the lever from one side of the stock section to the other.

    • A gun mount having a gun cover or shield contains a gun which may be directed in both azimuth and elevation. An ammunition storage space is disposed below the gun mount. Ammunition components are combined in the storage space to provide an ammunition round with the long axis of the round substantially vertical. The barrel of the gun is elevated to the 90.degree. or vertical position and when the breech block is opened the vertically disposed ammunition round is hoisted directed into the open breech. The round is latched in the breech while the hoisting mechanism is withdrawn and the breech is closed. Thereafter the gun may be depressed to a desired firing elevation and the round fired. The gun is then positioned at a predetermined intermediate elevation angle so that the gun breech is adjacent to a door in the gun cover which is controlled between open and closed positions. The breech is opened, the door is opened and the empty propellant case from the fired round is ejected through the open door. The gun is then repositioned to the vertical position to receive another round in the breech and the process is repeated. Conventional length ballistic projectiles and ultra-long guided projectiles may be handled by the disclosed loading system and the loading may be accomplished at any angle or azimuth or train.
