    • A biologically implantable containment device having a wet seal, the device being adaptable for drug formulations or cell suspensions. A porous membrane, in a tubular configuration, is formed and can be configured as part of a closed cell-tight system for loading. During loading, the containment device membrane is wet, while the loading system remains cell-tight. The containment device is wet-sealed through a combination of heat and pressure, while the system remains cell-tight. Sealing the containment device substantially or completely eliminates metabolic functioning of any organisms in the vicinity of the closure. The wet-seal is formed by melting a thermoplastic material that is in contact with the membrane. The containment device is separated from the cell-tight loading system, which remains closed after separation.

    • A method and apparatus for embedding cells that utilizes a flow-through embedding technique maximizes the efficiency of extractions and decreases time for embedding the cell fragments, minimizes cell loss, and automatically positions cell samples at the position in which a microtome blade will section them. The apparatus includes a cell flow pathway defined by an inflow tube for delivering cell fragments from a cell sample to a sample port. The sample port is in fluid communication with a tissue cassette having attached thereto a filter. The cell flow pathway is in communication with a reagent flow pathway for delivering the reagents through the sample port to the cassette. The apparatus is configured such that the application of pressure directs the cell fragments from the cell sample through the cell flow pathway, and effects delivery of the reagents through the reagent flow pathway. The apparatus produces an embedded cell block having concentrated cells near the plane of the block to be sectioned in a quick and efficient manner.

    • An apparatus and method for purification and assay of neurites is useful for separation and analyses of extension organelles and/or protrusion of cells for purification, production, observation, and quantification of neurites in the neurobiology field. The present invention provides a pore-sized controlled porous filter membrane which outspace side surface is coated with a cell adhesion layer to form an adhesion surface, and combines the neuronal cells with the porous filter membrane in an aqueous environment under conditions in which outgrown neurites from cell bodies of the neuronal cells are attracted to and grow on the adhesion surface, wherein the outgrown neurites of the neuronal cells pass through pores provided in the porous filter membrane to the adhesion surface while each of the pores has a size smaller than the cell bodies of the neuronal cells so as to prevent the cell bodies of the neuronal cells passing through the pores and remaining on an opposing side surface of the porous filter membrane.
