    • A potting apparatus has a first conveyor suitable for receiving a pot thereon, a second conveyor has a surface suitable for receiving soil thereon and having an end positioned so as to deliver soil to the pot on the first conveyor, a drill positioned above the first conveyor so as to be movable upwardly and downwardly relative to the pot on the first conveyor so as to form a hole in the pot, and a driving means cooperative with the first conveyor for moving the first conveyor in an indexing manner such that the first conveyor temporarily stops at a location directly below the drill. The drill is slidably supported on a frame so as to be driven by a belt connected to the drill. A servomotor is drivingly connected to the belt so as to move the drill in an upward direction or a downward direction.

    • The introduction of a heterogeneous solid substance, such as biomass, into a container which is under pressure is difficult. The rotary valves and airlocks used hitherto have substantial deficiencies. The use of standard screw conveyors has hitherto failed due to the fact that a cavity formed behind the screw helix in which gas could escape from the pressurized container. These deficiencies are resolved in that two independently controllable screws are arranged in a screw conveyor pipe. Between the primary screw driven by a motor and the secondary screw driven by another motor, the biomass is compacted by high pressure as a consequence of the different revolution speeds of the motors in such a way that an almost gas-tight plug is formed. The invention is particularly well-suited for the introduction of biomass into a gasification installation which is under pressure, for the production of synthesis gas.

    • A system for offshore production of hydrocarbons via a vessel arranged for quick connection to and disconnection from a submerged body. The system comprises an outer buoyancy member for introduction and releasable securing in a submerged downwardly open receiving space in the vessel, and a center member which is rotatably mounted in the outer member and is anchored to the sea bed and is connected to at least one riser extending between a production well and the vessel. A swivel device is arranged at the upper end of the buoy for interconnection and transfer of process fluid between the risers and a tube system on the vessel. The swivel device comprises an outer female member permanently fastened to the center member of the buoy with its opening coaxial with the center member, and an inner male member which may be lowered into and raised from the female member via an operator on the vessel. When connected, the swivel members define common annular spaces communicating with associated fluid paths in the swivel members. Seals are provided on each side of the annular spaces and can be activated to form a seal between the annular spaces during operation. The seal can be relieved when the swivel members are disconnected.

    • A simplified technique well suited for automated, high speed filling of packages with viscous vinyl plastic solutions, such as denture adhesives, which exhibit a (1) viscous taffy-like, sticky consistency and (2) a high degree of uniformity when utilized by the consumer. The first step of the technique requires he introduction of beads of the vinyl polymer into the open end of the package while simultaneously completely wetting each bead with a suitable solvent; a later step requires the aging of the wetted beads within the sealed package until the beads are fully dissolved and form a uniform product. In the preferred embodiment, the solvent is introduced into the open end of the package by a conduit. In the alternative embodiment, the solvent is injected into the package by an elongated needle with radial apertures, such needle being axially inserted into the interior of the package and being axially removed when the wetting step has been completed.
