    • The states of contact switches are switched when a mode switch is turned on. If the drilling operation is effected by means of a drill motor in this state, an oscillation signal which is repeatedly set to "H" and "L" in a preset period corresponding to an output of an oscillator is supplied to the control terminal of a firing pulse generator. The firing pulse generator interrupts supply of the control signal to the control terminal of a triac in the above preset period based on the oscillation signal supplied to the control terminal thereof to interrupt supply of an AC power source from a commercial AC power source to a bridge-type rectifier so as to intermittently drive a feed motor which is energized by an output of the rectifier in the above preset period. As a result, the drill motor can be intermittently fed towards a to-be-worked object by means of the feed motor, and, when the feeding operation is interrupted, a cutting operation can be instantaneously stopped and swarf can be cut apart.

    • A boring device includes a casing and an upwardly biased tool spindle supported in the casing so as to move in a feed direction and a return direction opposite thereto. A first thrust ring with a track surface is disposed coaxial with the tool spindle and is fixed thereto. A second thrust ring with a track surface is also disposed coaxial with the tool spindle and fixed to the casing such that the track surfaces of the first and second thrust rings face each other. A rolling element retaining ring is provided coaxially with the tool spindle between the first and second thrust rings and has bores circumferentially arranged at predetermined angular intervals. Rolling elements are fitted in the bores of the rolling element retaining ring such that the rolling elements roll on the track surfaces of the first and second thrust rings. Receptacles complementary to the bores are formed in the track surface of the first thrust member. A coupling mechanism is provided to allow the rolling element retaining member to directly or operatively engage with the second thrust ring and disengage therefrom.

    • An improved chip disposer which removes chips or iron chips produced from a machine tool by using magnetic force is disclosed. The chip disposer includes an extension shaft which is detachably mounted to a main shaft of the machine tool, an outer tube which is rotatably fitted to the extension shaft, a mechanism for preventing rotation of the outer tube in respect to a head of the main shaft when the extension shaft is mounted to the main shaft, a mechanism for positioning the extension shaft with regard to the outer shaft in a predetermined rotational angle, a plurality of permanent magnets disposed in a ring in an end of the outer tubes so that the same poles of the adjacent magnets are opposed to each other through attracting rods, respectively, and a plurality of permanent magnets disposed in a ring around the extension shaft so that the S- and N-poles thereof are alternately opposed to inner peripheries of the plurality of attracting rods, whereby a relative position of the permanent magnets in the end of the outer tube and the permanent magnets around the extension shaft is changed in response to normal rotation and reverse rotation of the main shaft to turn on and off attractive force.

    • An automated and adjustable control system for conducting peck drilling operations wherein a drill bit is advanced stepwise in successively increasing penetrations, rapidly retracted after each penetration to remove cuttings, thereafter rapidly advanced toward a work face and then slowed to a drilling advanced rate beginning with the bit a predetermined distance from the work face. Preferably, a pneumatic means rapidly retracts the drill upon completion of each penetration step. A feed rate control unit is partially retracted but limited to a distance less than retraction of the drill. When the drill is rapidly advanced by pneumatic means during each penetration step, the feed rate is decreased by the feed rate control unit to a uniform drilling rate prior to engaging the work face in the work piece.

    • A chip breaker and flute cleaner for twist drills is adapted for attachment to the worktable or column of a drill press or radial drill or the like. A base member carries an adjustable arm which carries a pair of block supports which is movable to a determined position in guides provided on the end of the arm. Each block support carries a rotatable disc of hardened steel which is disposed at an angle of about 45* to the axis of the drill. The arm and discs are positioned so that the discs are brought adjacent the drill with only a few thousandths of an inch clearance with the edge of the flutes of the drill and preferably at a point where the upwardly moving stringy chips tend to leave the flutes of the rotating drill. As the stringy chip is brought between the rotatable disc and cutting edge of the drill flute the chip is cut to ''''break'''' the chip into short lengths. A spray coolant applicator may be used in combination with the chip breaker and flute cleaner so that long stringy chips flow easily up the flutes to be broken between the discs and cutting edges of the flutes. The discs also act as a cleaner for the flute edges as they pass upwardly by the rotatable discs.
