    • An inflatable packer assembly includes a cylindrical mandrel with a cylindrical valve body concentrically disposed about the mandrel. The valve body includes an inlet communicating with an interior of the mandrel and an outlet for directing fluid to an inflatable element of the packer assembly. First and second axial bores, containing first and second pistons, respectively, are disposed in said valve body and communicate with an end surface thereof. The first bore also communicates with said inlet. A first port connects the first and second bores. A second port connects the second bore and the outlet. The first piston which includes a check valve is held in a first position blocking said first port until a pressure differential across the first piston reaches a first level at which the first piston is released and is moved to a second position allowing fluid communication between the inlet and the first port. The second piston is held in a first position allowing fluid communication between said first and second ports until a pressure differential across said second piston which senses the packer element inflation pressure reaches a second level, higher than said first level, at which said second piston is released and is moved to a second position blocking said second port. At this time the check valve of the first piston is actuated blocking said first port. A check valve disposed about the packer mandrel also prevents fluid flow from said inflated packer element.

    • A breakaway pipeline coupling is described which comprises first and second pipe sections forming a fluid seal and designed to separate at a predetermined axial load. A plurality of piston and cylinder pressure compensating devices are arranged around the exterior of the pipe sections to hold them together until separation.Shear pins or shear studs passing between the pipeline sections will fail when the coupling is subjected to an external tensile force exceeding the predetermined maximum force. The pressure compensating devices apply a compression load on the coupling to counteract the tension load exerted by internal pressure in the pipeline. The pressure compensating devices included pistons movable axially within cylinders in response to pressure differentials, and porting or tubing for exposing one side of the piston to the internal pressure within the coupling.When internal pressure produces a force which tends to separate the coupling, an opposing compressive force resulting from the pressure acting on the pistons tends to hold the coupling together. External tensile force tending to separate the coupling are resisted by the shear pins, but when a predetermined maximum external tensile force is exceeded, the shear pins fail and the pipeline sections separate.A first, normally closed valve is located within the first pipeline section, and a second, normally closed valve, or a valve lock pin, is located in the second pipeline section. When the pipeline sections are joined together, the valve(s) is locked in the open position and fluid can flow freely through the coupling and the pipeline in which the coupling is assembled. As the sections move relative to one another, each valve is shut to that the contents of the pipeline are not discharged into the environment.

    • Disclosed is releasable plugging apparatus for selectively closing a tubular member to permit fluid pressure buildup therein. When the fluid pressure is then decreased, a sealing device of the apparatus may be released, and the tubular member subsequently opened. Holding apparatus secures the sealing device in place until a compressed spring is permitted to move a piston so as to permit the holding apparatus to release the sealing device. A locking device prevents such movement by the piston until the pressure buildup first moves the piston in the opposite direction to release the locking device and to further compress the spring. The tubular member is thus not unplugged until the fluid pressure is decreased, thereby avoiding a large pressure pulse which might result if the sealing device were released with the fluid pressure at a high value. The embodiments described are particularly applicable for use with hydraulically-operated well tools, such as well packers. The present invention plugs the tubing string supporting the tool to allow hydraulic pressure aplication to operate the tool, and then unplugs the tubing string upon decrease of such hydraulic pressure rather than requiring a further increase of hydraulic pressure to force the plugging apparatus open.
