    • System and methodologies are provided herein for de-interlacing a video sequence. Various aspects described herein can utilize a motion adaptive video de-interlacing algorithm based on block-based texture classification and a multi-level decision hierarchy to interpolate missing fields of an interlaced video signal in the spatial and temporal domains. In accordance with various aspects described herein, respective blocks of an interlaced video sequence can be classified by a texture classifier as “textured” or “non-textured.” Based on this classification, one or more motion detection schemes can be utilized to determine whether the respective blocks are static or moving. Missing pixels from one or more blocks can then be estimated using the texture and motion classifications based on values of neighboring lines and/or pixels in the field from which the block was obtained as well as values of corresponding pixel locations in temporally adjacent fields.

    • A method of deinterlacing includes generating a deinterlaced display frame including a reference field of lines of display pixels of a first parity and a generated field of lines of display pixels of a second parity. A frame motion map is generated which includes bits representing a presence of motion or an absence of motion at the display pixels of the reference and generated fields. Testing is performed for the presence of motion or the absence of motion at a selected display pixel of the reference field utilizing the frame motion map. In response to detecting a presence of motion at the selected display pixel of the referenced field, replacing a pixel value corresponding to the selected display pixel with a pixel value generated by interpolating between display pixel values corresponding to neighboring display pixels in the generated field.

    • In a video system, a method and system for control of a multi-field deinterlacer including visually pleasing start-up and shut-down are provided. During a hard start, a deinterlacer may deinterlace a first received field and provide the resulting frame for display until sufficient fields are received to generate a pixel constellation for deinterlacing subsequent received fields. The deinterlacer may also provide a constant frame for display until sufficient fields are received to generate the pixel constellation. During normal operation, the deinterlacer may mitigate the effects of a discrepancy as to the received field type. When a video source is jittery or there is uncertainty as to the field type, deinterlacing may be forced to be based on spatial information. When a video source is shut off, a portion of the remaining stored fields may be flushed. At least one of the flushed fields may be deinterlaced and displayed.
