    • A system and method for providing full-duplex data communications between an electric power distribution station and a power consumer via the power distribution line providing electric power is provided. A first information transmitter, coupled to the power distribution circuit, provides first information signals concurrently with the power signal to the power consumer via the power distribution line. A first information receiver, coupled to a power consumer device powered by the electrical power signal, receives the first information signals via the electric power distribution line. A second information transmitter coupled to the power consumer device provides second information signals concurrently with the electrical power signal. A second information receiver, coupled to the power distribution circuit, receives the second information signals via the electric power distribution line. The information signals transmitted on the power distribution line can be transmitted at a frequency lower than the frequency of the transmitted power signal.

    • The switching circuit couples an appliance (1) to a power main (LN) via remotely controllable switching means (2) and is operable to change the state of the switching means (2) in response to a manual double switching of the appliance power switch so that the appliance can be manually switched ON after it has been remotely switched OFF.A capacitor (CAP1) generates from the mains voltage an alternating current signal of a phase differing from that of the mains voltage by an amount dependent on the external impedance across the output. The switching circuit monitors this phase difference and changes the state of the switching means (2) if it detects two phase difference changes exceeding a predetermined value in opposite senses within a predetermined time period, this being indicative of a manual double switching of the appliance power switch.The switching circuit does not operate spuriously for thermostatically controlled appliances nor in response to noise spikes.

    • Control signals are transmitted through a.c. mains supply lines to control operation of electrical equipment powered from the supply lines. A near short-circuit condition is introduced across the a.c. mains supply lines, for example, by firing a thyristor connected in series with a fuse across the supply lines, for the final portion of positive half cycles of the mains supply voltage, thus holding the voltage to a near zero value for this length of time. A receiver coupled to the mains supply lines includes a zero crossing detector circuit which responds to the near zero voltage conditions across the supply lines to perform a particular control operation on an associated appliance connected to the receiver. Different control operations may be effected by defining the control signals over a group of half cycles of the a.c. supply mains and selecting one or more half cycles of the group during which the supply voltage is reduced to the near zero level, thereby producing a sequence of selected and non-selected half cycles within the group so that by changing the sequence the particular control operation can be changed accordingly.
