    • A PCM module arrangement includes a three phase circuit breaker and PCM electronics unit. Each phase of the circuit breaker has a Rogowski coil at the line side and load side contacts in a vacuum bottle and another zero sequence current sensor encloses the load side conductors of the circuit breaker to provide a zero sequence current signal. A PCM electronics unit is provided with phase current measurement signals from the Rogowski coils. The PCM electronics unit provides a direct interface for various signals including a signal from a supervisory control and data acquisition system. The PCM electronics unit, combined with the multiple interface connections, permits a set of highly integrated PCM functions to be carried out, enabling the PCM module to selectively respond to both phase and sensitive ground faults when applied to various types of equipment and apparatus in generation and distribution systems which are characterized by distributed architectures and high resistance system grounding with a minimal number of sensors and logic devices. The PCM module also accommodates a wide range of electrical system voltage and frequencies.

    • To check the presence of operating vacuum in vacuum switches, high voltage can be applied between the contacts at a given contact spacing and the dielectric strength can be tested. According to the invention, the procedure for vacuum monitoring is that a contact spacing (h) below the nominal stroke of the vacuum switch is selected and that the X-radiation generated at this contact spacing (h) and high voltage (U) in vacuum due to the field electron emission between the contacts by the contact surfaces acting as anode is acquired and evaluated as proof of the presence of operating vacuum inside the switching tube. This method can preferably be applied to encapsulated vacuum switching tubes, in particular to SF.sub.6 -insulated switching facilities. Associated with the vacuum switching tube (15) in the associated equipment is an X-ray detector, preferably a Geiger-Muller counter, which is connected to the high-voltage unit (25) via an evaluating circuit (30 to 50) which serves for the determination and indication of the operating vacuum and shuts off the high-voltage unit (25) to minimize the X-ray dose. Due to the X-ray emission, which is stopped long before reaching impermissible values, the presence of vacuum can be positively verified.

    • The invention is directed to an arrangement which serves to detect deficient operational capability of vacuum switching vessels and which causes a signal to be given if a fault affecting the operability occurs. Instead of the signal, a protective device alone or together with the signal can also be caused to respond. According to the arrangement of the invention, the electromagnetic radiation emanating from the vacuum switching vessel is gathered by means of a detector and evaluated for providing the signal or initiating the action of the protective device. The range of the electromagnetic radiation in the region of thermal radiation is especially suitable for use. The invention is suited particularly for application in switchgear equipped with vacuum switching vessels.
