    • A vacuum-type electrical switching apparatus (10) for high voltage electrical power. A vacuum pressure condition in a vacuum pressure space (21) surrounding electrical contact points (18) is monitored and movement of the contact points between open and closed positions is automatically prevented when the pressure exceeds a predetermined threshold in order to avoid destructive arcing between the points. A sensor (32) provides a vacuum signal (34) responsive to the vacuum pressure condition. A controller (36) automatically inhibits movements of the contact points when the vacuum signal indicates that the vacuum has degraded. A contactor (38) may be placed in series with power supply (28) and a solenoid (24) used to move the contact points, with the contactor being automatically opened by the controller in response to the degraded vacuum condition. An electromechanical opening inhibitor (74) may be energized by the controller to mechanically prevent the contact points from being moved in response to the degraded vacuum condition.

    • A vacuum switch comprises a first vacuum container containing therein a circuit breaker, a second vacuum container containing therein the first vacuum container and grounded, and a third vacuum container connected to the second vacuum container, containing therein a disconnecting switch and an earth device and grounded. The second and third vacuum containers are isolated in vacuum from the first vacuum container, and the second vacuum container is electrically insulated from the first vacuum container. The second vacuum container contains an insulator fixed to a conductor connected to the circuit breaker and a movable rod partially disposed out of the vacuum containers and operating the circuit breaker to open and close. The disconnecting switch, circuit breaker and the insulator are arranged in a line. A vacuum switchgear comprises the above-mentioned vacuum switches of the number corresponding to three phases and necessary components, each being contained in a metal box.

    • An apparatus for protecting a vacuum interrupter type on-line tap changer in which a cross current flows between taps through a current limiting resistor for a predetermined time by shorting selected taps therebetween at the time of tap changing operations. Vacuum interrupters are employed as current switching elements. A dial switch selects the position of the tap of the tap changer. A limit switch closes only at a predetermined position of the dial switch during tap changing operations. Thus, a cross current between the taps or a load current flowing for a long time due to a drop in the degree of vacuum of the vacuum interrupters is detected, thereby preventing burn-out of the current limiting resistor and damage to contacts of a disconnecting switch due to interruption of the current.

    • A method is disclosed for detecting a leak in any one of the vacuum interrupters of a vacuum-type circuit breaker that comprises a plurality of vacuum interrupters disposed within a housing filled with pressurized insulating gas. The method comprises: (a) opening the circuit breaker and effectively disconnecting the closing mechanism of the breaker from the operating rod of the breaker so as to effectively preclude the closing mechanism from exerting a closing force on the operating rod, (b) measuring the net force on the operating rod after (a) has been performed, and (c) comparing the measured net force to a standard value corresponding to the force on the operating rod when the interrupters are intact and the insulating gas is at the same pressure as when the net force was measured.
