摘要： A breather filter unit for a magnetic disk drive including a base and a cover fixed to the base, the cover having a vent. The breather filter unit includes a casing fixed to an inner surface of the cover, the casing having a vent inlet communicating with the vent of the cover and a vent outlet communicating with an inside of the magnetic disk drive, and a first filter contained in the casing at a position adjacent to the vent inlet, the first filter being formed from a plurality of fibers extending in a direction substantially parallel to that of an air flow from the vent inlet to the vent outlet. The breather filter unit further includes a second filter bonded to the casing so as to cover the vent outlet, and an activated carbon layer contained in the casing at a position between the first filter and the second filter.

摘要： A disk drive having a hermetically sealed disk chamber capable of being filled with gas at pressures above ambient pressure with a specially designed connector assembly for use with the sealed chamber. Helium or nitrogen is injected into the sealed disk chamber. To decrease power consumption at high platter spin rates, the present invention advantageously utilizes a sealed disk chamber filled with helium to reduce tribological resistance forces associated with the surfaces of the spinning platters. Nitrogen is used to reduce oxidation of the disk platters. Special fixtures maintaining high position tolerance and connectors are designed to coupled the PC board controller of the disk drive unit to the components of the disk drive within the sealed disk chamber to eliminate connecting flexcircuits from the junction of the hermetically sealed chamber.

As a result, the height of a portion of a hard disk apparatus which constitutes a radial directional gap type spindle motor can be minimized and therefore the overall height of the apparatus can be minimized. Hence, the thickness and the size of a computer apparatus or the like which includes the hard disk apparatus can be reduced.

摘要： An optical disk drive is located in a housing having a centrally pivoted door. An optical disk cartridge is inserted into the drive and is received by a sealing member. The cartridge and sealing member divides the interior of the drive into two compartments. The first compartment contains the electronics which need to be cooled and the second compartment contains the optical elements. The door and sealing member allow airflow in the first compartment but prevent it from reaching the second compartment. An airfoil is positioned over the optical elements in the second compartment to protect them from airflow developed by the spinning disk.
