    • Binary data (VDO) developed to a dot pattern are sequentially stored in line memories (1-9). A processing circuit (43) is constituted by a logic calculation circuit, and determines an edge portion of an image or a halftone image on the basis of 11.times.9 pixel data in shift registers (34-43). When the edge portion of an image is determined, data of a pixel of interest is converted to data that can print a smooth edge portion. Changed data (VDOM) is converted again according to the type of toner. The converted signal is supplied to a laser driver of a printer, and a printing operation is performed by scanning a laser. A resolution setting unit (1700) receives a resolution setting command from an external apparatus (1300), and sets a designated resolution in a printer (1200) according to the resolution setting command. The resolution setting unit (1700) divides one pixel into an optimal number of pixel sections on the basis of the designated resolution, and sets a logic circuit for performing optimal smoothing processing for divided data in a smoothing unit (1018). Bit map development based on code data supplied from the external apparatus (1300), and smoothing processing according to a smoothing logic, are performed.

    • An image processing apparatus includes a window setting device for setting a portion of a written region of an image composed of dots in an orthogonal matrix as a window, and for moving the set portion within the written region. A first edge detecting device serves to detect differences between image data of a given dot in the window set by the window setting device and image data of dots neighboring the given dot, and serves to detect directions of the detected differences. A second edge detecting device serves to detect edges between neighboring dots other than the given dot, the detected edges relating to image data differences and image data difference directions respectively equal to the image data differences and the image data difference directions detected by the first edge detecting device. A calculating device serves to provide the edges, detected by the second edge detecting device, with predetermined coefficients respectively, and serves to add the predetermined coefficients for the edges detected by the second edge detecting device to calculate a sum of the predetermined coefficients. A signal generating device serves to generate an image signal which varies a size of the given dot in accordance with the sum of the predetermined coefficients which is calculated by the calculating device.

    • A method and system for efficiently generating grayscale character fonts from bi-level master character fonts decomposed into rectangles. For each filter array to be used for converting master character fonts into grayscale characters there is generated at least one summed area filter array. Each element in each summed area filter array represents the sum of the filter array elements in a corresponding subarray of the filter array. A grayscale character is generated by performing, for each rectangle in the corresponding decomposed master character, the steps of:specifying a filter array, and its corresponding summed area filter arrays;determining the pixels in the grayscale character affected by the rectangle and a set of corresponding sampling points located inside and near the rectangle;for each grayscale character pixel affected by the rectangle, performing the steps of:assigning the pixel a predefined value corresponding to a black pixel if the corresponding sampling point is located inside the rectangle, and is offset from the perimeter of the rectangle by at least one half of the extent of the filter's support; and otherwiseadding to the value of the grayscale pixel a value from the summed area filter array corresponding to the intersection of the selected filter array, centered at the sampling point corresponding to the grayscale pixel, and the rectangle.
