    • A developing device containing an initial developer in a sealed initial developer storage space sealed with a film and a magnetic toner in a sealed toner container is mounted on the frame of an electrostatic apparatus. Then, the film sealing the initial developer storage space and the toner container is removed to let the initial developer fall into an initial developer containing space near a developing sleeve and to let the magnetic toner fall into a space separated from the initial developer containing space by a partition wall. As the magnetic toner of the initial developer is consumed with the progress of printing operation, the toner flows through a gap defined by the partition wall into the initial developer containing space. The initial developer and the magnetic toner can be surely supplied to the developing sleeve simply by removing the film before using the developing device.

    • In an image forming apparatus has a photosensitive drum, the drum is charged by a main charger. A light beam bearing image information is applied to the drum by an exposure system to form a latent image on the surface of the drum. The latent image is developed by a developing unit, using a toner to form a toner image on the drum surface. The toner image is transfered to the surface of a paper sheet by a transfer charger. The developing unit serves to remove, simultaneously with the development of the latent image, the toner remaining on the drum surface after the transfer by the transfer charger. Before the removing of the remaining toner, the drum is in sliding contact with a brush member. The remaining toner is temporarily attracted to the brush member by the bias voltage applied to the brush member, with the result that the remaining toner becomes easy to separate from the drum. In the apparatus, the drum and at least the brush member are integrated as one process unit. The process unit is removably insertable into a predetermined operative position in the body of the apparatus. Accordingly, when the drum is removed from the operative position, the toner attracted to the brush member is prevented from scattering in the body by removing the brush member with the drum.

Accordingly, a developing cartridge and an image forming apparatus has a free length of a developer regulating member that is adjustable to keep the density of developer uniform according to material characteristics of the developer regulating member.

    • In an image forming apparatus, a second shutter is caused to slide in conjunction with a first shutter which slides in the mounting direction in association with a mounting operation of a developing device to an apparatus body. Accordingly, in association with a separating movement of the developing device from the apparatus body, the first shutter is caused to slide in association with the second shutter which slides in the separating direction, which is the opposite direction from the mounting direction. The direction that the second shutter opens a discharge port is the same direction as the mounting direction. An urging force that a first urging member applies to the first shutter which closes an inlet port is smaller than an urging force that the second urging member is applied to the second shutter which closes the discharge port.
