    • A double-pass projection display system with separate polarizers and analyzers. One embodiment of the invention includes an input polarizer, a color separation/recombination device, and a number of image producing sections. The input polarizer receives unpolarized white light and polarizes this light. The color separation/recombination device receives the polarized white light and separates this light into a number of component color bands. The color separation/recombination device then supplies a component color band to each image producing sections. Each section includes a spatial light modulator and an output analyzer. The spatial light modulator modulates the color band that the image producing section receives from the color separation/recombination device. The output analyzer then (1) discards the light, in the modulated band, that has a first polarization state, and (2) directs the light, in the modulated band, that has a second polarization state to the color separation/recombination device. The color separation/recombination device then produces a single color light by combining the component color bands that it receives from the output analyzers of the image producing sections.

    • A polarization device comprises: a light source; a first lens plate including a plurality of lenses in a planar configuration that divides light emitted from the light source into beams defined by apertures of the plurality of lenses; a second lens plate which is different from the first plate and includes a plurality of lenses in a planar configuration, the plurality of lenses of the first lens plate individually forming light spots at the plurality of lenses of the second lens plate; a polarization beam splitter array constituted of a plurality of polarization beam splitters provided continuously, that performs polarization splitting of light that has been emitted from the light spots of the plurality of lenses of the second lens plate and has entered therein to split the light into p-polarized light and s-polarized light, and emits the split light; and halfwave plates provided at an emission surface of the polarization beam splitter array that convert polarized light emitted from the polarization beam splitter array either from p-polarized light to s-polarized light or from s-polarized light to p-polarized light. And the halfwave plates are provided at the emission surface of the polarization beam splitter array, in different arrangements between a central area of the polarization beam splitter array and a peripheral area excluding the central area.

    • An improved holographic backlight and liquid crystal display system. The holographic backlight comprises a cold cathode fluorescent tube for providing white light, and a light pipe disposed to receive the white light. A phase retarding film layer is attached to a first surface of the light pipe. A double-layer reflection/transmission hologram is disposed on an output surface of the light pipe opposite the film layer. Light from the cold cathode fluorescent tube is injected into the light pipe, and is diffracted off of the double-layer hologram. This produces quasi-collimated s-polarized light having well-defined spectral colors that is transmitted by the hologram in an array of red, green, and blue patches of light corresponding to the clear apertures of the red, green, and blue elements of an active matrix liquid crystal display. The result is a liquid crystal display with high display brightness, reduced battery power requirements, increased battery lifetime, and high contrast over a wide viewing angle.

    • A linear polarization/conversion apparatus includes a light source, a polarizing beam splitting means, first and second focusing lenses, and first to fourth total reflection mirrors. The light source includes a reflector having a paraboloid of revolution. The polarizing beam splitting means splits light from the light source into a linearly polarized transmission light component and a linearly polarized reflection light component. The first and second focusing lenses are respectively disposed to oppose exit surfaces, of the polarizing beam splitting means, from which the linearly polarized transmission and reflection light components emerge. The first and second total reflection mirrors are inclined at 45.degree. with respect to the exit surfaces, respectively, so as to totally reflect the linearly polarized transmission and reflection light components from the first and second focusing lenses. The third and fourth total reflection mirrors are respectively inclined at 45.degree. with respect to the reflection optical axes of the first and second total reflection mirrors to totally reflect the light, reflected by the first and second total reflection mirrors, in the same direction.

    • A polarization illumination device and projector having the polarization illumination device are provided. An example of the polarization illumination device comprises an illuminator and a polarized including a polarization splitting surface and a reflecting surface, the splitting surface and the reflecting surface form an inverted V shape. The splitting surface splits part of the light into a transmitted component and a reflected component and directs the former in a first direction and the latter toward the reflecting surface. The reflecting surface reflects a remaining part of the light and directs it toward the splitting surface. The splitting surface splits the remaining part of the light into a transmitted component and a reflected component. The former directed toward a second direction different from the first direction, and the latter is returned to the illuminator. The illuminator modulates a plane of each returned reflected light component and causes each returned reflected component to be incident on the polarizer again.
