    • An electromechanical firing mechanism having a stack of piezoelectric elements arranged to move a firing pin by switching the piezoelectric material from a static state to an electrically charged state. The electromechanical firing mechanism is comprised of a bolt housing a striker and a firing pin. The bolt further includes a base plate and a center axis whereby the firing pin is moveable along that axis. The striker has a distal end and a proximal end, the distal end is fixed to a base plate and the proximal end is coupled to the firing pin. The striker consists of a stack of piezoelectric elements. A control circuit and battery is electrically connected to the piezoelectric materials for switching and powering the piezoelectric material from a static state to an electrically charged state. The stack of piezoelectric elements moves the firing pin into the primer of the cartridge when electrically charged.

    • A system for firing shell-cased projectiles including multiple barrels and a breech assembly, which includes multiple detonators each aligned to a corresponding one of the barrels. Each detonator may include a plunger coupled to a firing pin, and a solenoid for driving the plunger and firing pin toward the corresponding barrel upon firing, and an actuator-driven mechanical safety device including a slide plate switchable between first and second lateral positions. The slide plate may include multiple entrapment pins, each corresponding to one of the detonators. When the slide plate is in the first lateral position, each of the entrapment pins are positioned so as to obstruct movement of the plunger in the corresponding detonator, thereby rendering the corresponding detonator inoperable to fire eve if the corresponding solenoid is actuated. On the other hand, when the slide plate is in the second lateral position, each of the detonators is operable to fire when the corresponding solenoid is actuated.

    • A paintball gun trigger system includes a trigger, an emitter arranged to emit light and collector arranged to receive an amount of the light that varies with the position of the trigger and produce a signal that varies with the position of the trigger. A controller is arranged to determine from the signal when the trigger has been pulled and released. In one embodiment, the light beam from the emitter is pulsed on and off and the signal from the collector is sampled at regular intervals. Variations in the pulsed collector signal are used to detect when the trigger has moved to a pulled position and a released position, and when the collector is swamped with light from another source.

    • A firing system for a large-caliber weapon includes a firing pin displaceable into a position of rest, an armed position and a firing position; a spring urging the firing pin into the firing position; a follower affixed to the firing pin; and a rotatably supported control cam having a cam track. The spring urges the follower toward the cam track. The cam track has first, second and third consecutive cam track portions. The first cam track portion is shaped such that upon rotation of the control cam the firing pin is moved into the armed position by a cooperation between the follower and the first cam track portion. The second cam track portion is shaped such that upon continuing rotation of the control cam the firing pin is allowed to be accelerated by the spring into the firing position. The third cam track portion is shaped such that upon rotation of the control cam the firing pin is returned from the firing position into the position of rest by a cooperation between the follower and the third cam track portion. Further, an external drive is provided for rotating the control cam. An actuator operates the external drive for rotating the control cam through one cycle to effect consecutive cooperation between the follower and the first, second and third cam track portions.
