摘要： A non-Newtonian fluid is used in an electrokinetic device to produce electroosmotic flow therethrough. The nonlinear viscosity of the non-Newtonian fluid allows the electrokinetic device to behave differently under different operating conditions, such as externally applied pressures and electric potentials. Electrokinetic devices can be used with a non-Newtonian fluid in a number of applications, including but not limited to electrokinetic pumps, flow controllers, diaphragm valves, and displacement systems.

Opposing mesh layers are placed into relative motion by a variety of motive forces. Fluid between the opposing mesh layers is compressed so as to be pumped through the mesh layers when the relative motion of the layers is toward each other. Mesh layers may also be offset from each other though an actuating force so that one mesh layer blocks the openings in the other mesh layer, thereby creating an impediment to fluid flow. The degree of offset may be varied so as to create a partial impediment to fluid flow, thereby presenting a filter effect.

摘要： A MEMS-based cell sorter is disclosed, which uses a novel combination of features to accomplish the cell sorting using a microfabricated cell sorting valve housed in a disposable cartridge. The features include an interposer that provides fluid communication between the microfluidic passages in the silicon substrate and a plurality of fluid reservoirs in the cartridge, including a sample, sort and waste reservoir The disposable cartridge may include other features that assist in the handling of small volumes of fluids, such as a siphon region in the sort reservoir and funnel-shaped regions in the sample and waste reservoirs. A mixing mechanism may be provided for stirring the contents of the sample reservoir.
