    • The present invention provides an improved multi-mold apparatus for manufacturing friction members, with each mold composed of a set comprising a first (top) mold, a second (bottom) mold, and a frame mold. The apparatus is capable of correcting any misalignment in the mountings of the plurality of molds and accurately aligning the molds by movably supporting at least one of the first mold, the second mold and the third mold by first, second and frame bases, respectively, so that the base and molds are movable laterally, in a direction perpendicular to the direction of advance. Projections are formed on one of the first mold and either the frame mold or the back plate and bonding through-holes are formed on the remaining mold or the back plate, so that the projections engage the holes so as to align the first mold and the frame mold accurately.

    • A brake shoe (10) for a drum brake system (40) is provided with a brake lining (12) having a friction surface (14) which faces braking surface (60) of a brake drum (38). The lining (12) is characterised by the provision of one or more grooves (16) extending across the friction surface (14). The shoe (10) may be incorporated in a cooled drum brake system (10) in which cooling is provided by ventilation holes in the drum (38). Cooling may be further enhanced by the provision of ventilation holes (66) in a back plate (46) of the system (40). In an alternate system, cooling is provided by sealing the drum (38) to form a space for holding a volume of oil.

    • A universal friction lining support is affixed on or just under the surface of a friction lining to resist wear and vibrations caused by the road, eliminating the need for a backing plate. The support is configured to fit in the corners of friction linings of various lining assembly sizes. Extensions on the exterior edge of the support locate the friction lining relative to the caliper housing as the piston is engaged. Various attachment features, such as holes or protrusions, can be also added to the support to secure the support to the friction lining.

    • The present invention is directed to a method of manufacturing of sintered bonded adhesive plates. The present invention comprises the steps of clearing the metal cores, applying thermosetting adhesives, such as phenolic or epoxy adhesives, to the core layer, then applying sintered layers on top of the adhesive layers and bonding said layers at a temperature in the range of 375-475 F, pressure in the range of 25-1000 psi and bonding such structure for at least 30 seconds. The metal core may be fabricated from metals whose melting point is at least 450 F, such as aluminum. The present invention presents a relatively inexpensive way of manufacturing sintered bonded adhesive plates.
