    • A motor driven eccentric vibrator with a spring isolated biasing mass for applying force to an earth penetrating device to cause the device to penetrate into the earth. The vibrator is rigidly attached to a housing which is rigidly attached to the earth penetrating element, which may be a sampling/core tube, while the biasing mass is suspended from the housing by a suspension that allows relative motion between the housing and the biasing mass in a vertical direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the earth penetrating element. The biasing mass serves to apply a down force on the housing while not significantly reducing the amplitude of the vibrational displacement of the housing in a vertical direction. This mass also reduces the vibrational displacement of the housing in a horizontal direction caused by a single eccentric vibrator.

    • A pile driving apparatus including two vibratory hammer units fixed to the top of a support plate having a U-shaped cutout, and a pair of hydraulic clamps fixed to the bottom of the support plate. The support plate is secured to the pile when the hydraulic clamps on the bottom of the support plate engage flanges provided on a hydraulic pile clamp which is clamped to the pile. Hydraulic motors housed within the vibratory hammer units cause the pile to vibrate in a vertical direction, thus gradually driving the pile into the ground. The U-shaped cutout allows the support plate to be positioned on the pile, with the pile passing through the support plate, without having to lift the vibratory hammer and support plate assembly over the top of the pile. This arrangement is particularly advantageous in circumstances where overhanging structures limit the clearance available above the location of the pile. A gate is removably attached to the support plate, across the open end of the U-shaped slot, to add rigidity to the support plate.

    • Method for producing a narrow or slit wall (42) in soil (22) by means of a driver (10) with at least two and preferably three vibrating tubes (I, II, III) and guide blades (28, 30, 32) between the vibrating tubes. Following penetration of the driver into the soil, during the withdrawal process of the latter, injection material (40, 44) is loaded into the drilled cavities. During the next work step, the driver is lowered into the soil so that the rearmost vibrating tube (I) is lowered into the still-soft injection material (40) which was added during the previous withdrawal of the foremost vibrating tube (III). By monitoring the power draw of the vibrating motor on the rearmost vibrating tube (I) and regulating this power draw to keep it to a minimum value, removal of the rearmost vibrating tube from the still-soft injection material (40) is prevented. As a result the seal between the successive sections of narrow wall (42) is ensured. Continuous abutting of the paths (40, 44) produced by the individual vibrating tubes ensures the tightness of each wall section.

    • A pair of spaced walls which may be formed from corrugated metal sheets are joined together with a bottom plate being attached to the edges of the walls to form a box-like structure. A drive shoe formed by a pair of plates may be attached to the bottom of the structure. A sonic oscillator is attached to the top edges of the structure and sonic energy, preferably at a frequency which causes resonant standing wave vibration of the box-like structure, is applied to such structure so as to drive it into the ground. Successive sections of similar box-like structures are driven into the ground in end to end overlapping relationship to form an elongated box structure installed in the soil. This structure is employed to provide a barrier against the migration of soil pollutants. Further, soil samples can be taken from the area contained by the box-like structure to evaluate the effectiveness of the barrier provided by the first wall. The device can also be utilized as a contaminant monitor by providing perforations in the first wall to collect samples of liquid for evaluation by a contaminant monitor.

    • A vibratory pile driver has a rigid housing, a pair of parallel and horizontally spaced shafts journaled for rotation wholly independently of each other about respective parallel and horizontally spaced axes in the housing, respective generally equally massive and eccentrically mounted weights on the shafts, and respective nonpositive hydraulic drive motors on the housing connected to the shafts for oppositely rotating the shafts and the respective weights. Thus the weights are independently and nonpositively driven and are not mechanically linked together so that the horizontal components of their rotation cancel each other out and the two opposite rotations automatically synchronize themselves with each other.

    • Vibrations having a frequency exceeding 150 Hertz are established in a rigid body by means of a vibrator system that in one embodiment includes a pair of rotating wheels, only one of which has a weighted eccentric secured to its axle. The wheels are coupled together by an endless belt made of a material that dampens the vibrations propagating between the wheels. The unweighted wheel is driven by a flexible shaft connected to its axle. In another embodiment three wheels are used in which two are weighted at the axles. The vibrator system may be used to sink pipes and the like into the ground, or shake a sorting table employed, for example, in the mining industry or a silo hopper for discharging grain. Also disclosed is a method for sinking a pipe or the like into the ground and retrieving it after lowering it a predetermined distance. In this method, wires are attached at each end of the pipe for facilitating its downward motion and its retrieval. In another of the embodiments disclosed the vibrator system can rotate as well as simultaneously vibrate pipe into the ground.
