    • A material moving system is disclosed for use in a plant such as a metal foundry. There is an overhead gantry for moving a main hook and auxiliary hook. The main hook carries a container such as a scrap charge bucket. The auxiliary hook carries a multi-function auxiliary tool such as a magnet with a tool hook affixed to the magnet. The scrap charge bucket carries a target member on a saddle on the outside of the bucket. The bucket also has a hold out stand that positions the target member for easy accessibility. The target member is attached to actuator cables that are attached to clam shell bottom members of the scrap charge bucket. The auxiliary tool may be used to lift and pull the target member to open the clam shell members without removing the magnet from the auxiliary hook, saving time. The hook on the magnet is positioned so that the hook does not damage the scrap metal bins or electric arc furnaces when the magnet is used for its usual purposes. The target member is shaped so that its position on the magnet is secure when it is lifted off of the saddle support; it has two plates with edges that complement the shape of the magnet, and with a center of gravity that tends to hold the target member against the magnet.

    • A clam bucket attachment designed to cooperate with the crowd and the bucket curl or crowd hydraulic cylinder of a conventional backhoe, which attachment includes a bucket support pivotally and rotatably carried by the backhoe crowd and having a cable which operates to open and close a clam bucket suspended from the bucket support. A cable boom is removably, but rigidly attached to the crowd, and includes a forward and rear sheave which receive the cable, one end of which is connected to the crowd hydraulic cylinder, and the opposite end to the clam bucket. The clam bucket is opened and closed by extending and retracting the crowd hydraulic cylinder and is raised and lowered by operation of the backhoe crowd and boom, in conventional fashion.

    • A cable-controlled grab device possessing a pair of scoops directly and linkably connected to a support yoke. A central shaft has the scoops pivotably mounted at opposite ends thereof. An upper portion of tackle is secured to the yoke while between a lower portion thereof and the central shaft is arranged a releasable locking mechanism for indirectly connecting the scoops to the yoke. The locking mechanism has two locking arms urgeable by a remotely controllable actuating mechanism into a locking position in engagement with a locking member associated therewith. The actuating mechanism takes the form of a pressure medium cylinder linkably connected between the locking arms and inserted in a hydraulic circuit adapted to be pressure-loaded so as to force the locking arms into the locking position. A remotely controllable valve is included in the hydraulic circuit and is capable when closed of maintaining the arms in the locking position and when open of permitting the locking arms to slide out of engagement with the locking member due to the weight loading of the scoops.
