    • The device for feeding sheet stacks 26 has a guiding device 5, in which a plurality of endless guide belts 18, 19, which guide the sheet stack 26 to a motor-driven sheet feed device 8 arranged on a removal side of the sheet stack. The endless guide belts 18 are arranged in an essentially horizontal stack support surface 4. The essentially vertical, stack-side feed sections of the feed conveyer belts 35 of the sheet feed device 8 are subdivided by articulated rollers 38 of a horizontal articulated shaft 39 arranged in the upper third of the sheet stack 26 into a lower decollation section 33, which is sloped by more than 5.degree. and less than 30.degree. relative to the vertical line, and an upper, more highly sloped feed section 34. To achieve reliable decollation of sheets even in the case of sheets of paper carrying high electrostatic charge, an intermittent drive 75 is provided, which drives the sheet 26' lying on the decollation sections 33 of the feed conveyer belts 35 with pulse-like acceleration steps. In addition to or instead of this, the articulated rollers 38 may be eccentrically mounted on the articulated shaft 39 to cause the sheet stack 26 in contact with them to vibrate during rotation.

    • Printed products arriving in an imbricated formation are wound on a hollow cylindrical winding core together with a winding band in a wind-up station. A magazine or storage unit for the finished wound product packages is arranged in the vicinity of the wind-up station. After a wound product package has been fully wound up, it is rolled out of the wind-up station into the magazine or storage unit. A pallet is located in this magazine or storage unit onto which the finished wound product package is rolled. This pallet is displaced substantially perpendicular to the rolling direction of the finished wound product package. In this way, a plurality of wound product packages are arranged adjacent one another, typically in side by side relationship on one pallet. Blocking elements prevent the finished wound product packages from rolling off the pallet. By rolling the finished wound product packages out of the wind-up station to the adjacent magazine or storage unit there is afforded the possibility of emptying the wind-up station in a very short period of time without considerable effort and to prepare the wind-up station for receiving a new winding core.

    • Apparatus which takes stacks of pre-formed, stored printed signatures and forms them into a uniform shingle, running at extremely high velocity, for transport into a processing device such as a rotary trimmer or quarter folder. The apparatus, in certain major aspects, includes an input conveyor and a support table creating a vertical queue stack of signatures which is maintained at very low but essentially constant weight and height by photocell control of the speed of a conveyor which adds signatures to the top of the stack, a conveyor belt running beneath the bottom of the stack in a cut-out region of the stack-supporting table, with sequential vacuum clutching to the tail portions of successive signatures caused by spaced rows of holes extending across that belt and registerable with longitudinal slots in a vacuum shoe beneath the belt. As each row of holes reaches and runs along the slots, vacuum action clutches successive signatures to the belt, and the signatures are pushed at a constant rate seriatim from the bottom of the stack to exit in overlapped, shingled relation through a gate. The shingle setback is determined by the spacing between rows of holes in the belt, and the velocity of the exiting shingle may be varied by changing the belt drive speed without affecting the shingle setback.

    • A first stream of non-overlapping spaced-apart sheets which move at a high speed is converted into a second stream of partially overlapping sheets by braking successive sheets of the first stream and deflecting the trailing portions of braked sheets laterally to enable the oncoming foremost sheets of the first stream to catch up with and partly overlap the preceding sheets. When the first stream exhibits a gap as a result of the absence of one or more sheets, or independently of the presence or absence of gaps, the deflection of the braked sheet is repeated at a location which is nearer to the braking station to thus insure that the trailing portion of the braked sheet preceding a gap is deflected laterally immediately before the sheet which follows the gap catches up therewith. The deflection of trailing portions which precede gaps in the first stream is effected by suction. The locus of such deflection can be shifted lengthwise of the path for the sheets in dependency on changes of the ratio of the speeds of first and second streams, on changes of the width of clearances between the sheets of the first stream and/or in dependency on changes of the length of sheets.
