    • A carton transfer assembly having a rotary feeder that rotates a series of selectors about a transfer path between a carton feeder and a transport conveyor. The selectors each include vacuum engagement members adapted to engage a selected carton to remove the selected carton from the carton feeder and carry the carton toward a transport conveyor as the rotary feeder rotates the selectors about the transfer path. Each selector further includes stingers that are operated off of the vacuum applied to the cartons by the vacuum engagement members to move the stingers between extended and retracted positions. As the vacuum is applied to the stingers, the stingers are retracted. When the vacuum is disengaged, the stingers move to an extended position to engage and spread apart the panels of the cartons to open the cartons prior to the deposit of the cartons within the carton pockets of the transport conveyor.

    • The instant invention is used to feed a stack of flattened cartons in which the cartons extend in respective parallel planes and where the stack has an end formed by a frontmost carton. A device for picking the cartons off the stack starting with the frontmost carton includes a grab displaceable along a path passing through a pickup point and operable when at the point to engage and grip the frontmost carton, and a system for displacing the path and thereby moving the location along a generally straight line for setting the picker for cartons of different height. The carton-supply system has a stationary support adjacent the grab path, a supply magazine having a plurality of guide elements extending parallel to a predetermined feed direction and holding the stack of cartons with their planes substantially perpendicular to the feed direction and with the plane of the frontmost carton defining a predetermined acute pickoff angle with the line of the grab, and an adjustment system supporting the magazine guide elements on the support for straight-line movement in an adjustment direction forming with the feed direction an angle equal to generally half of the pickoff angle and for arresting the magazine in any of a multiplicity of positions offset from each other in the adjustment direction.

    • An apparatus for separating and erecting foldable boxes has a supply magazine for foldable boxes, a removal device with revolving suction grippers, and an endless conveyor device provided with carriers and blower nozzles, which are disposed laterally of the conveyor apparatus with the blower nozzles arranged to inflate the conveyed foldable boxes. The suction grippers pull the foldable boxes out of the magazine seriatim in the direction in which the foldable boxes extend and transfer them to the conveyor apparatus such that they lie flat on an arc-like stretch. For guiding the chains of the conveyor device and for guiding the foldable boxes in the arc-like stretch, arc-like curved guide rails are disposed on the revolving path of the suction grippers following the magazine. The blower nozzles are associated with a straight stretch of the conveyor device.

    • A carton opening mechanism for use in opening knocked-down cartons has a carton storage magazine which has a discharge opening. The mechanism has a first suction face which is circumferentially spaced 120 degrees from the discharge opening of the magazine. The mechanism is mountable so as to locate the receiver compartment equidistant from the discharge opening and first suction face. A rotary transfer mechanism is mounted for rotation about the central axis and has a suction head formed with a transfer suction face. The transfer suction face is moves between, a first position in which it is directed toward the discharge opening and positioned to engage a wall of a carton blank located in the storage magazine and, a second position in which it is directed toward and disposed opposite the first suction face of a carton opening mechanism to press an opposite wall of the carton into engagement with the first suction face, and, a third position in which it is directed toward and disposed adjacent the entranceway of the receiver to deposit an open carton in a receiver compartment. The transfer mechanism then returns to the first position. A suction control mechanism is provided to generate a negative pressure at said transfer suction face when it is required.
