    • A shape-preserving device which is attached to the top and bottom mold section of a thermoforming machine which reciprocatingly thermoforms articles from a heat-softened plastic sheet. The device includes a cavity mold attached to one mold section and a remolding shoe assembly attached to the other. The remolding shoe assembly includes a floating remolding shoe attached to the outer end of a piston rod connected to a pressurized fluid-actuated pneumatic cylinder which is in unimpeded flow communication with a source of compressed air. As the sheet indexing movement is completed, the mold cavity and the floating shoe clamp the rearmost portion of the rearmost articles produced by the preceding shot and maintain a substantially constant pressure upon this portion while at least one mold section continues to move to full close position, while the succeeding mold shot is being completed, and while the mold section to which the floating shoe is attached moves away from the thermoformed sheet through a distance somewhat greater than the depth of the thermoformed articles.

    • A package formed from a film of relatively stiff material is provided having an upwardly opening recess for containing an article. At least a portion of opposite side walls of the recess are inclined inwardly to engage and hold the article in the recess. An integral hinge is provided in the package along an axis of the recess permitting the base of the package to be bent along the hinge line to a position where the normally inwardly inclined side walls are parallel to one another to allow insertion of article into the recess. Thereafter, when the package assumes its flat position the walls of the recess incline inwardly and retain the article in the package. Also disclosed is a mold for forming the package and a method for inserting an article into the package.

    • In a vacuum-forming operation, four adjacent compartment liner sections are formed as an integral structure from a single sheet of thermoplastic material. Two pairs of adjacent molds, each having the desired shape of the inside surface of the corresponding liner section to be formed, are mounted along their base portions on frame structure hinged in regions of adjacency of the mold base portions, to provide for pivotation of the base portions so that confronting surfaces of the four molds are movable angularly toward and away from one another. A sheet of thermoplastic material disposed to extend over the molds is heatsoftened, and then is ballooned upwardly while the molds are held in their pivoted positions, in which positions the confronting surfaces are substantially spaced from one another. A mold assist-plug and the pivoted molds are then moved, relative to one another, to urge the ballooned sheet into general close conformity with the molds. While the sheet of material is still soft, the mold frame structure is pivoted to cause adjacent wall portions of the molds to assume their closely spaced positions. Air entrapped between the heated sheet and the walls of the molds is then evacuated through a number of small ports, or vents, in the walls, thereby forming the desired integral liners, which are then cooled and stripped from the molds.

    • In a vacuum-forming operation, a pair of adjacent, side-by-side compartment liners are formed from a single sheet of thermoplastic material. A pair of adjacent molds, each having the desired shape of the inside surface of the corresponding liner to be formed, are mounted along their base portions on frame structure hinged in the region of adjacency of the mold base portions, to provide for pivotation of the base portions so that confronting surfaces of the molds are movable angularly toward and away from one another. A sheet of thermoplastic material is disposed to extend over the molds, and is heated, causing it to soften while the molds are held in pivoted position in which the confronting surfaces are substantially spaced from one another. Mold assist-plugs and the molds are then moved, relative to one another, to urge the sheet into general close conformity with the molds. While the sheet of material is still soft the assist-plugs further are caused to engage the mold frame structure, through the intermediacy of the sheet, pivoting the frame structure and causing adjacent wall portions of the molds to move toward one another and assume their closely spaced position. Air entrapped between the heated sheet and the walls of the molds is then evacuated through a number of small ports or vents in the walls, thereby forming the desired liners which are cooled and stripped from the molds.
