    • An improved inspection system for verifying that resistance welding electrodes have been properly dressed; that associated pairs of the electrodes are aligned with each other within predetermined tolerances; and that the pressure applied by a weld gun to the electrodes and material being welded is within predetermined standards. The system incorporates low pressure air apparatus that evaluates the back pressure resulting from the fit of collet geometry relative to the form of the electrode tip, and apparatus to verify the alignment of opposing electrodes with respect to each other and incorporating fiber-optic sensors that evaluate the alignment of collets with respect to each other. The system also provides apparatus for verifying that the proper pressure is applied to the workpieces by the electrodes during the welding operation.

    • An apparatus detects an opening in a fluid flow passageway such as occurs when a resistance welding cap which is cooled by the fluid flow becomes accidently detached from a welding machine. Upon detection of an opening, an air-actuated pinch lever is activated to quickly pinch shut flexible fluid inlet and outlet hoses and thereby shut off the fluid flow. Inlet and outlet flow rate sensors provide periodic outputs to a digital computer which determines directions of inlet and outlet flow acceleration. If either the inlet or outlet acceleration changes direction, a baseline inlet or outlet flow rate is set equal to the corresponding current flow rate value to prevent erroneous opening detection due to normal flow fluctuations. If the inlet and outlet accelerations are in the same direction, the baseline values are similarly updated. If the inlet acceleration is positive and the outlet acceleration is negative, it indicates a probable opening. Another test is made to preclude an erroneous detection by determining if the inlet and outlet flow rates are different from the baseline values by more than a predetermined percentage. If so, a valid opening is indicated and the fluid flow is shut off.

    • Control systems and methods for inspecting at least one of a plurality of parts using an inspection station are disclosed. A comparator coupled to the inspection station compares a test signal responsive to a measured parameter of a part in the inspection station to a reference signal to determine if the part matches a predetermined profile. The comparator then provides a fault signal which disables the inspection station upon determining that a part matches the predetermined profile. The profile matching part is then removed from the inspection station and stored in a storage device. The storage device then provides a confirmation signal to the comparator indicating that the profile matching part has been stored in the storage device. The comparator then enables the inspection station upon receipt of the confirmation signal. The control systems and methods of the present invention may be incorporated in a production line adapted to index at least one of the plurality of parts into and then out of the inspection station.

    • An electrical resistance-roll seam welding machine having a pair of welding rolls or rollers and at least one electrode wire which is guided from a supply station for the infeed of fresh welding wire by means of at least one of the welding rolls to a collecting station or location for used or consumed wire. The electrode wire can be brought into contact by means of the welding rolls with the workpiece which is to be welded. A brake device is arranged between the supply station and the welding rolls and a tension device for the electrode wire is disposed between the welding rolls and the collecting station or location. The sum of the tension force exerted by the tension device upon the wire and the brake force exerted by the brake device upon the wire is great enough in order to continuously maintain in tensioned state the electrode wire through its path of travel between the brake device and the tension device. At least one of the welding rolls is operatively coupled with a drive device which imparts to the electrode wire which is guided by means of said one welding roll a speed of travel coinciding with the desired feed speed of the workpieces during the formation of the welding seam. The difference between the tension force exerted by the tension device upon the wire and the brake force exerted by the brake device upon the wire is smaller than the entrainment force exerted by the periphery of said one welding roll upon the electrode wire.

    • A base is mounted on a welding machine and has slide rails. Each rail has paired flat top sides angularly converging upwardly toward one another. A table has slide channels also each having paired flat sides angularly converging upwardly toward one another at angles substantially equal to that of the rails. The table channels rest on the rails with their flat sides in sliding relationship to the flat sides of the rails. When welding forces are applied to the table, the flat sides of the rails and channels jam or wedge into substantially solid electrical contact at their interface due to their angulation. A shield is attached to the end of the table and covers the rails in their exposed projection beyond the table. In a table having two welding locations, a shield is attached at both ends of the table. The shields protect the rails against welding spatter, dust, etc., to keep the rails clean to insure maximum electrical contact. The sliding table allows a workman to load and unload workpieces outside of the welding area which substantially reduces the likelihood of accidental injury.
