    • A method of forming a drive surface on an eccentric pin of a drive shaft for a scroll-type compressor is provided. First, an eccentric pin having an axis and a generally cylindrical outer surface disposed radially about the axis is provided. Next, a broaching tool having a machining face with a contour is provided. The contour may be a concave shallow bell-shaped curve. Finally, the drive surface is formed by engaging the outer surface with the machining face transverse to the axis. In this manner, the machining face forms a shape complementary to the contour on the eccentric pin thereby forming a slight crown on the drive surface. The broaching tool produces an adequate surface finish so that no subsequent machining operations to the drive surface are necessary.

    • A transmission for converting rotary motion to simultaneous reciprocating motion of a tool in two mutually transverse directions. A driver is selectively attached to one end of an input shaft and the opposite end of the input shaft terminates at an eccentric cam. An output shaft extends between a driven end and a working end. The driven end is apertured to rotatably receive the eccentric cam and the output shaft is slidably received in the diametrically extending bore of a spherical bearing member. Upon rotation of the input shaft, the working end of the output shaft is caused to reciprocate toward and away from the input shaft and, simultaneously, laterally relative to a longitudinal axis of the input shaft. The working end of the output shaft may be provided with appropriate cutting teeth to enable its use, for example, as a power broach for the precise removal of bone to enable proper implantation of a prosthetic device. In another embodiment, the working end may be movable in three mutually transverse directions.

    • A method of broaching an axial row of grooves for roots or rotor blades in a multi-stage, frusto-conical rotor structure by inclining the angle of reciprocation of the cutting tool of the broach relative to the periphery of the rotor structure and to the axis of rotation of the rotor. The grooves in the largest diameter land are cut to the full size of the broach, while the succeeding lands are cut with a smaller portion of the cutting tool in a diminishing manner, with the smallest diameter land having blade root grooves of smallest cross-sectional area. The resulting structure is a rotor having a plurality of increasing diameter lands, each land having an annular row of grooves, the grooves in each land axially aligned with the grooves in the adjacent lands to form a plurality of axial rows of grooves. The grooves in the smallest diameter lands have smaller grooves than those in the largest diameter lands.
