    • A method of performing a medical procedure, such as surgery, is provided. A nerve is stimulated in order to adjust the beating of the heart to a first condition, such as a stopped or slowed condition. The medical procedure is performed on the heart or another organ. The stimulation of the nerve is stopped in order to adjust the beating of the heart to a second condition, such as a beating condition. The heart itself may also be stimulated to a beating condition, such as by pacing. The stimulation of the nerve may be continued in order to allow the medical procedure to be continued. A sensor to sense a characteristic of a fluid or tissue, such as an impending contraction, may be also used during the medical procedure. Systems and devices for performing the medical procedure are also provided.

    • A method is described for increasing the likelihood of the occurrence of an arrhythmia in a heart, particularly a ventricular arrhythmia of the type leading to Sudden Cardiac Death. The method includes the steps of creating an atrioventricular block in the heart of an animal test subject, inducing a myocardial infarction in the heart of the test subject, and then stimulating myocardial hyperinnervation the test subject. In a specific example described herein, the atrioventricular block is created by ablating the atrioventricular node of the heart using an ablation catheter. The myocardial infarction is induced by ligating the left anterior descending portion of the coronary artery. Myocardial hyperinnervation is stimulated by application of Nerve Growth Factor or other neurotrophic vectors to the left stellate ganglion. The test subject is an adult canine. By creating an atrioventricular block and a myocardial infarction within the heart of an adult canine test subject, then stimulating nerve growth within the left stellate ganglion of the subject using Nerve Growth Factor, it has been found that there is a significant increase in the likelihood of Sudden Cardiac Death arising from ventricular arrhythmias. It is believed that the Sudden Cardiac Death of the test subject arises in a manner very similar to circumstances wherein Sudden Cardiac Death occurs in human patients subject to a previous myocardial infarction. Thus, the method facilitates the collection of data pertinent to conditions within the heart arising prior to Sudden Cardiac Death and for developing and testing therapies intended to prevent Sudden Cardiac Death.

    • An electro-stimulation device includes a pair of electrodes for connection to at least one location in the body that affects or regulates the heartbeat. The electro-stimulation device both electrically arrests the heartbeat and stimulates the heartbeat. A pair of electrodes are provided for connection to at least one location in the body that affects or regulates the heartbeat. The pair of electrodes may be connected to an intravenous catheter for transvenous stimulation of the appropriate nerve. A first switch is connected between a power supply and the electrodes for selectively supplying current from the power supply to the electrodes to augment any natural stimuli to the heart and thereby stop the heart from beating. A second switch is connected between the power supply and the electrodes for selectively supplying current from the power supply to the electrodes to provide an artificial stimulus to initiate heartbeating. In another aspect, the invention is directed to a method for arresting the beat of a heart in a living body comprising the steps of connecting the pair of electrodes to at least one location in the body that affects or regulates the heartbeat and supplying an electrical current to the electrodes of sufficient amplitude and duration to arrest the heartbeat. The device may also serve to still the lungs by input to a respirator or by stimulation of the phrenic nerve during surgical procedures.

    • An apparatus and method for treating post-defibrillation electromechanical dissociation (“EMD”). A first embodiment comprises an implantable defibrillator, which may include cardioversion and pacemaker capabilities, which has the capability of detecting and treating post defibrillation EMD. The stimulator/defibrillator has one or more leads with electrodes. At least one electrode for defibrillation may be an endocardial or epicardial electrode or other suitable defibrillation electrode. A sense circuit senses the electrical condition of the heart of the patient. A hemodynamic sensor senses a parameter correlated to the state of blood flow. The cardiac stimulator/defibrillator detects ventricular tachyarrhythmia including fibrillation and terminates ventricular tachyarrhythmia. After termination of the ventricular tachyarrhythmia, the stimulator/defibrillator can detect the presence of electrical rhythm in the heart correlated, however, with inadequate blood flow to sustain life. Under such conditions, the device provides an output to stimulate the heart to overcome electromechanical dissociation and restore adequate blood flow. The device may also be an external therapy device, as part of, or in conjunction with an external defibrillator. The method for treating the heart to restore blood flow where electromechanical dissociation occurs after termination of a ventricular tachyarrhythmia or ventricular fibrillation comprises identifying electromechanical disassociation after termination of a ventricular tachyarrhythmia or a fibrillation and providing electrical therapy, the therapy comprising a series of packets of electrical pulses.
