    • A high strength fastener for bone fractures. This fastener consists of two members, a male and female. The male member has external machine screw threads that screw into matching internal threads in the female member at a predictable torque so that the force of fixation exerted upon the bone can be approximated by the installer. Because of the effective length of the threads, this fastener is easily adjusted to the proper length without cutting. Both members have a smooth shoulder region proximal to the heads and this shoulder region presents a low-stress bearing surface to each cortical wall. Each member has a head that fits rigidly into an installation tool providing for ease of insertion and fastening in the patient with minimal invasion and little periosteal stripping. Each head has a semi-spherical face that articulates with matching washers and plates, thus allowing the washer to assume the plane of the surrounding bone therefore distributing the load over a greater area.

    • A bone plate comprises a base plate having at least two screw holes and at least two bone screws capable of securing the bone plate to a bone by insertion through the screw holes into the bone. The bone screws have heads shaped to toggle within the screw holes. A retaining plate is provided that is fixedly attachable to the base plate. The retaining plate covers at least a portion of each of the bone screws. The retaining plate and base plate each contain set screw apertures. A set screw is provided to retain the retaining plate in place over the base plate by screwing the set screw through the set screw apertures in the retaining plate and base plate. This design prevents the bone screw from backing out from the bone once screwed in through the base plate.

    • A combination driver and bone screw assembly comprising a screw shank with a uniform diameter threaded portion, an unthreaded portion with a outwardly tapered end and a driving end portion of substantially wedge shaped configuration which can be engagably seated in a wedge shaped notch seat of a driver member. The driver member is rotated driving the bone screw into the previously cut bore in the patients bone until the tapered surface of the bore engages the tapered undercut surface of the screw.

    • A repositioning tool for handling pedicle screws which have annular heads with parallel clamping faces is provided. The tool has a tongue-shaped portion connected to a handle, which tongue-shaped portion is brought into engagement with the head of a pedicle screw in the axial direction thereof. The tool can apply a tilting moment perpendicular to the length axis of the pedicle screw and can apply a torque.
