    • Disclosed is a magnetic tape cassette handling apparatus which is compact and reliable and which handles cassettes gently and firmly. The handling apparatus includes (a) a pusher member for gently moving a cassette forwardly into a cassette receiving location, and (b) clamping members for firmly clamping a cassette while moving the cassette rearwardly out of the cassette receiving location. The cassette handling apparatus is preferably located in a central opening of a cassette storage ferris wheel structure which is mounted adjacent to a magnetic tape recorder/player. Thus, the cassette handling apparatus loads and unloads a cassette from the ferris wheel structure into and out of the magnetic tape recorder/player.

    • Disclosed is a system for bidirectionally guiding web, such as tape in magnetic tape recording/reproducing apparatus. The system eliminates the necessity for edge guides, reduces stresses in web resulting in longer web life, and effects accurate tracking of the web as it is transported in opposite directions. The system includes a plurality of edgeless cylindrical guide rollers mounted on members which are pivoted together. The system includes a plurality of edge sensors and linear servo motors. The edge sensors measure the web edge position and the linear servo motors control the amount of rotation about a pivotal axis which coincides with the center line of a span of web. In this way, web edge position is controlled without any frictional sliding contact between the web and guiding rollers and without the use of edge guides which damage the web edge.

    • Disclosed is magnetic tape cassette transport apparatus for use with a magnetic tape cassette storage and utilization system. Magnetic tape cassettes are transported between locations in the system by means of a cassette transport/accessor assembly, which is actuated by a belt drive system using stationary drive motors. This drive system eliminates the need to mount drive motors on the transport assembly, thus effecting a lighter weight, less complex assembly. The transport/accessor assembly includes two vertical rails rigidly mounted on upper and lower wheel carriages which travel on spaced horizontal rails adjacent to the cassette storage and utilization system. An accessor platform travels vertically on the vertical rails. The accessor platform supports a pair of cassette accessor assemblies which insert and extract a cassette from a location in the cassette storage and utilization system. The power for driving the cassette transporter/accessor assembly is provided by stationary motors coupled to the transport/accessor assembly through sprocket driven, high-yield stainless steel belts. Separate motor and belt drive systems provide selective movement of the transport/accessor assembly in horizontal, vertical and lateral directions.

    • A data signal channel, such as a record/reproduce channel of a magnetic tape recorder, is automatically calibrated by means of multiple control signals which are applied to the channel simultaneously. The disclosed technique is fast, accurate, and effective in automatically calibrating a multispeed, multichannel, magnetic tape recorder in an optimum amount of time. A channel to be calibrated is stimulated with a complex wave-form having harmonic content at frequencies where reproduce amplifier equalization controls are effective. The channel response is measured and analyzed into the desired frequency components. A set of error values are determined by calculating the difference between the measured response values and known target response values at the desired frequencies. If the set of error values are not within allowable error limits, new control values are calculated from multiple control equations. The new control values are generated and sent to adjust the equalization controls. The process is reiterated until the calculated errors are within allowable limits for each of the desired frequency components.

    • Pneumatically controlled apparatus serves jointly for automatically threading magnetic tape along a transport path past a magnetic transducer head external to a magnetic tape cassette, then transporting the tape along such path. Tape transport elements of the pneumatic-type--air-bearing guides, a vacuum capstan, etc.--are arranged, like the magnetic head, on the oxide surface side (the information-bearing surface) of the magnetic tape. To thread the tape, a vacuum source provides an air pressure gradient the effect of which is to draw tape, spanning a supply reel and a take-up reel, from the cassette in the form of an expandable loop which takes the shape of the transport path when the tape loop expands into operative engagement with each transport element and the transducer head. The transport elements further include a pair of concave air-bearing guides disposed immediately adjacent and tangential to opposing sides of the transducer head. The vacuum source, in cooperation with each air-bearing guide, provides the same air pressure gradient, used to thread the tape, to draw, and to thereby maintain, the tape adjacent the tape-guiding surface of each air-bearing guide during movement of the tape between the supply reel and the take-up reel.

    • A Faraday-effect magneto-optic transducer of a rotary form includes first and second optical fibers having adjacent ends aligned with each other for joint rotation along a circular path. Opposing surfaces of a planar element of a magneto-optic material are attached respectively to the adjacent ends of the fibers for rotation therewith. The first fiber is arranged with respect to a light source for scanning an entering beam of polarized light along the circular path, a portion of which is immediately adjacent and substantially parallel to the information-bearing surface of a magnetic storage device, such as magnetic tape. The planar element modulates the entering light according to the magnetization of the region of the storage device adjacent the magneto-optic material. The second optical fiber receives light transmitted through the magneto-optic material, to form a beam of polarized light exiting the transducer, whereby the exiting light is modulated with respect to the entering light because of the Faraday magneto-optic effect.
