    • To address the need to support multiple packet data service instances in a more efficient manner, various signaling enhancements are provided. These enhancements will result in faster packet data call setups, reactivations, and dormant handoffs of multiple service instances while reducing over-the-air signalling. For originations of multiple packet data service connections, the mobile (101) requests the setup of up to six service instances with a single origination message (e.g., 400). For packet data dormant handoffs, the mobile requests the handoff of up to six service instances using a single message. And for reactivations, the mobile requests the reconnection of multiple, dormant packet data service instances with a single message.

    • A method and apparatus is provided for controlling network access in a communication system comprising a packet data network and a circuit switched network. The packet data network receives, from the circuit switched network, a message indicating that the circuit switched network is congested. In response to receiving the indication, the packet data network broadcasts a message informing that access to one or more services of the circuit switched network is restricted. In various embodiments, the message received from the circuit switched network may include access class barring parameters identifying one or more classes of user equipment or service classes that are one or more of being barred from accessing the circuit switched network or whose access to the circuit switched network is being reduced and/or may identify one or more coverage areas or access nodes of the circuit switched network where access is being restricted.

    • A communication system 100 acquires band class information and assigns a band class to MS 102 when the MS is engaged in a process of initiating a connection with infrastructure 104. The MS informs the infrastructure of the MS's band class capabilities when the MS initially performs an access attempt with the infrastructure in a reveres link associated with a first band class, that is, on r-csch 142 in reverse link 140. When the band class where the MS initially attempts access is congested, or the infrastructure desires to switch the MS to a second, alternate band class for any other reason, the infrastructure is able to immediately determine the band classes supported by the MS and to immediately assign the MS to a f-csch 132 or traffic channel 134 in a forward link 130 that is associated with the second, alternate band class supported by the MS.
