摘要： A prosthesis is provided for replacing a bone surface. The prosthesis includes an implant having a surface for abutting a bone, and an augment configured to be attached to the surface of the implant by bone cement to compensate for bone loss. The augment is formed to include an aperture therein defined by an inner wall. The prosthesis also includes a plastic peg coupled to the implant. The peg is configured to enter the aperture formed in the augment and to engage the inner wall of the augment to retain the augment in a spaced apart relation relative to the implant to permit the implant to be installed onto the bone before the bone cement cures. Alternately, the surface of the implant is formed to include an aperture therein, and a plastic retaining ring located in the aperture formed in the surface of the implant. A metal peg is coupled to the augment. The metal peg is configured to enter the aperture formed in the implant and to engage the plastic retaining ring therein to retain the augment in a spaced apart relation relative to the implant.

摘要： A controlled stiffness elongated implant for use in the hip or other appropriate body joint. In the instance of the hip, a ball member fixed to the femur is rotatably engaged with a cup-shaped socket member fixed to the acetabulum of the pelvic bone. The ball member is mounted on one end of a femoral component which has an elongated stem receivable in the intramedullary canal of the femur. The stem has a generally longitudinally directed reduced mid-stem section. The dimension of the reduced mid-stem section is uniform or variable between the proximal and distal ends so as to affect the mass moment of inertia at any given location along the length of said stem to thereby achieve an optimal stem flexibility.

The implants may include a base member, such as an acetabular shell or an augment, that is configured to couple with an augment, flange cup, mounting member, or any other suitable orthopedic attachment. An augment provided for an acetabular implant may be adjustably positionable around the implant. An implant may have one or more slots that mate with connections on the augment and allow the augment to move within the slot. An augment may be translated, rotated, or moved in any other way to achieve a desired orientation prior to locking the augment in place relative to the implant. The augment may be locked by a screw or other locking mechanism that holds the augment in place. The locking mechanism may be releasable to allow for repositioning of the augment.

摘要： Instruments for use in anterior approach total hip arthroplasty. Instruments according to certain embodiments of the invention connect to a shaping member such as a broach, reamer or osteotome that is used to prepare the intramedullary canal of a desired femur or other bone for total hip arthroplasty. Such an instrument according to such embodiments can be configurable to allow operation on either the left or right leg, and in doing so to provide lateral offset and anterior offset of the instrument handle relative to the shaping member so that the patient's gut, musculature or other bodily portions may be avoided while still providing desired leverage and control over the shaping member to prepare the intramedullary canal.

Next, mounting a portion of the surgical cable to the surgical cable clamp. Next, applying a force to the portion of the surgical cable so that the surgical cable is restrained or secured relative to the surgical cable clamp with a first tension in the surgical cable. Then releasing the force on the extended portion of the surgical cable so that the surgical cable can be repositioned relative to the surgical cable clamp. Finally, applying another force to the extended portion of the surgical cable so that the surgical cable is again restrained or secured relative to the surgical cable clamp.
