    • An apparatus for detecting the position of a reel in a reel-type slot machine is described. A drive gear is mounted on axis with each reel and stepper motor. The drive gear rotates with and is driven by the motor. The drive gear includes at least one flag to detect a home position once every revolution of the reel. The drive gear drives a second gear which has a proportional ratio to that of the drive gear corresponding to the number of symbols displayed on the reel. The driven gear also has one or more flags placed thereon. A detection device positioned near the mesh point of the gears signals both the home position of a reel and intermediate positions corresponding to each display symbol on the reel. Such apparatus can be used to detect the position of the reel with increased accuracy but without adding mass to the reels.

    • A coin transporting and stacking mechanism transports coins between two endless belts which form a coin transporting channel. The coins are gripped on diametrically opposed edges by the counter-rotating belts, and securely held as they travel towards the coin ejecting end of the channel. The coin ejecting end moves vertically to stack ejected coins one on top of the other to form a coin stack suitable for automatic wrapping. The mechanism is capable of transporting and stacking coins in a relatively small space due the movable, flexible transporting channel. Moreover, the mechanism requires fewer parts than conventional coin transporting and stacking systems to enhance reliability.

    • A coin sorting and counting system which comprises a rotatable disc having resilient surface for receiving mixed denomination coins and imparting rotational movement to the coins; a drive motor for rotating the disc; a stationary sorting head having a contoured surface spaced slightly away from and generally parallel to the resilient surface of the rotatable disc, the sorting head including an outwardly spiralling channel for queuing the coins on the disc into a single file of coins, and a guiding edge which engages selected edges of the coins in the single file and guides the coins along a prescribed path where the positions of the non-engaged edges of the coins are determined by the diameters of the respective coins; a counting station along the prescribed path for separately counting each coin denomination before the coins are sorted; and a sorting station spaced circumferentially from the counting station, in the direction of coin movement, for discriminating among coins of different denominations and selecting coins of different denominations for discharge from the rotating disc at different locations around the periphery of the sorting head.
