    • Disclosed herein is a liquid crystal display device including: a first substrate having a pixel area in which pixels are arranged in a matrix form; a second substrate disposed to be opposed to the first substrate; a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first and second substrates; a conductive section disposed at least on the first of the first and second substrates to apply a voltage to the liquid crystal; an organic film disposed at least over one of the first and second substrates; a sealing area adapted to hold the two substrates of the liquid crystal display device together at the peripheral portions of the first and second substrates; and an organic film-free area which is free from the organic film and extends from the inward side of the outermost end of the sealing area to the outward side of the outer periphery of the pixel area.

    • A liquid crystal display able to deal with high definition display and able to secure both of a transmission type display luminance and a reflection type display luminance, wherein light from backlights 71a and 71b are focused by a lens sheet 74, luminance of the backlights is improved, a transmittance can be set at 4 percent to 10 percent, a reflectance can be set in a range from 1 percent to 25 percent, and high definition display is handled while securing a display light luminance equivalent to that of a liquid crystal display performing only transmission type display and a reflection display light luminance required for the display without increasing a power consumption of the backlights.

    • A linear solid-state image sensor includes a first chip and a second chip, each of the first and second chips having a long substrate, a plural number of photo-responsive elements formed in a line on the substrate, an analog switch circuit driving the photo-responsive elements, and a shift register shifting signal to make the analog switch circuit successively effective. The second chip is mechanically connected to the first chip so that a shift direction of the shift register circuit is in agreement with a shift direction of the shift register circuit of the first chip. The linear solid-stage image sensor further includes an external wiring connecting a first stage of the shift register circuit of the first chip and a final stage of the shift register circuit of the second chip, and an input wiring being formed on the substrate of the second chip and leading signal input from the terminal at the end of the side opposite a connection portion with the first chip to a first stage of the shift register circuit of the second chip.
