    • A system for use in gravel packing operations wherein a gravel placement mandrel defines an axial flowbore and two or more lateral slurry flow ports for communication of slurry from the flowbore to the interior of the wear sleeve/blast liner. The slurry flow ports are oriented so as to distribute the slurry in different outwardly radial directions. The slurry flow ports are also axially displaced from one another along the gravel placement mandrel body. Relatively equivalent flow rates or flow amounts are provided through each of the slurry flow ports. Improvements are also provided in the geometry of the slurry flow ports to enhance the flow of slurry through them.

    • A tool for multiple purposes features one ore more dogs that can engage a collar groove or restriction sub in the wellbore. The dogs are extendable through a sleeve biased in opposed directions and are supported from a mandrel. The dogs can retract into mandrel grooves to clear restrictions on the trip into the well. On the way up to a collar that has just been passed, the dogs engage and an upward pull on the mandrel displaces fluid through a restriction to allow enough time to get a meaningful surface signal of the overpull force. Thereafter, the applied force can be reduced as the dogs release at a lower applied force to reduce the slingshot effect. The tool can be inverted and used to keep a constant force on a bottom hole assembly during offshore drilling where a heave compensator is employed.

    • It has been discovered that sticking caused by proppants used in a frac pack or gravel pack operation during hydrocarbon recovery efforts can be mitigated by placing a proppant anti-sticking fluid in a downhole space, such as an annulus adjacent a tool system or service tool. An operation is conducted that involves passing a carrier fluid including a proppant through the tool system. The carrier fluid is gelled and optionally crosslinked. The proppant anti-sticking fluid is flushed through the tool system to break the gel, contact the proppant and substantially clear the proppant from the tool system. Finally, the tool system is removed from downhole. The proppant anti-sticking fluid includes a diluent, such as an aqueous fluid, a brine, or a non-aqueous fluid, and an effective amount of a gel-breaking component to break the gel, and may, but does not necessarily include a surface tension-reducing compound, such as a surfactant.

    • A downhole tool, such as a packer or bridge plug, employing an inflatable element, is disclosed. A pressure-compensation system is in fluid communication with the annular space between the body of the packer or plug and the inflatable element. The compensation system responds to thermally induced pressure load changes within the wellbore by allowing fluid to escape from beneath the inflated element when increases in fluid temperature in the wellbore increase the pressure under the element. The system additionally supplies fluid behind the element should the wellbore fluids decrease in temperature, thus lowering the pressure under the inflatable element. The compensation system counteracts what would otherwise be a tendency for a pressure increase, which could subject the inflatable element to failure from overpressure and, conversely, supplies fluid to under the inflated element so that it can prevent unwanted loss of sealing or anchoring integrity of the packer or plug due to what would have otherwise been a pressure decrease behind the inflatable element.

    • A completion apparatus and method are illustrated to allow the use of an inflatable bridge plug system to be set in lower casing after the open-hole section has been drilled underbalanced. This is coupled with an assembly to deflate the plug which is run on the bottom of the completion liner. The completion liner is run downhole without having to kill the well to reduce possible formation damage from kill fluids. Sifter the open-hole section is drilled, the plug is run in the hole on coiled tubing and set. Heavy fluids are then circulated above the plug without its being applied to the open-hole formation. The liner for the open-hole section is run in the well with a deflation tool, which ultimately engulfs the deflated plug using the mechanical support associated with the plug to facilitate the enveloping procedure. After envelopment, setdown weight releases the anchor for the plug and the assembly is run in the hole with circulation through the plug to facilitate advancement.

    • An apparatus for effecting chemical treatment of any selected portion of a subterranean well bore comprises a pair of vertically spaced, inflatable packing elements which are run into the well on a fluid conduit, such as continuous tubing. The apparatus permits circulation while being run into the well bore and, when positioned at a desired location, effects the expansion of the two inflatable elements by pressured fluid introduced through the supporting fluid conduit. The applied pressure is trapped within the inflatable elements by axial movement of an inner body assemblage of the apparatus relative to an outer body assemblage, which is opposed by a spring. The relative movement effects the opening of fluid communication between the central fluid conduit and the wall bore portion between the inflated packing elements, permitting testing of the sealing effectiveness of the packing elements, and the application of a treatment fluid. The same movement, accompanied by an increase in fluid pressure supplied through the fluid supply conduit, effects the opening of a fluid path to the well bore above the uppermost packing element. The pressurizing and/or testing fluid remaining in the fluid supply conduit may be discharged into the well annulus by supplying pressurized treatment fluid through the supply conduit. For deflation of the inflatable packing elements, the central body is moved downwardly by the spring, a circulation port is opened and a rupture disc is ruptured through the application of preselected higher fluid pressures, thus permitting drainage of fluid from the inflatable elements and circulation as the tool is withdrawn from the well.

    • An inflatable well tool and method of use is provided. The tool has a central body and an annular inflatable packing element. A fluid passageway transmits pressured fluid for inflation purposes. One end of the packing element is secured relative to the tubular body while the other end is selectively secured relative to such body. The inflatable means is positioned such that a pre-determined amount of axial tension must be produced in the inflatable element prior to releasing one end of the element for axial movement relative to the tubular body to provide a more uniform radial inflation of the inflatable element. The device may be repeatably utilized without retrieval to the top of the well and the inflatable element is biased to permit second inflation by resisting axial movement of the inflatable element relative to the tubular body such that second and subsequent settings of the tool in the well result in uniform inflation of the inflatable element.
