    • The invention relates to a non-ionic surfactant having the formula:CF.sub.3 (CF.sub.2).sub.m --Y--(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.n --CHR.sub.1 --CHR.sub.2 --CHR.sub.3 --COOMand to the process for the preparation and use of said surfactants. The process involves reacting an alcohol ether, CF.sub.3 (CF.sub.2).sub.m --Y--(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.n H, with a metal hydroxide, MOH, to produce the corresponding intermediate salt,CF.sub.3 (CF.sub.2).sub.m --Y--(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.n M,and reacting said salt with a butyrolactone, ##STR1## to produce the corresponding carboxypropylated product shown above, wherein Y is oxygen or --SO.sub.2 N'--R where R is lower alkyl; R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are each independently hydrogen or C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl; M is a sodium, potassium or lithium cation; n is an integer having a value of from 2 to 50 and m is an integer having a value of from 3 to 25.
