    • A method and apparatus are provided for error correction in a communication system employing Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing. When a remote unit receives an OFDM symbol, a retransmission indicator bit is examined to determine whether the symbol is an original symbol or a retransmitted symbol. If it is a retransmitted symbol and the remote unit has a corresponding symbol stored in memory, then the received symbol is soft-combined with the stored symbol. Each packet in the symbol, either the received symbol if original or the soft-combined symbol if retransmitted, is examined by the remote unit. If the remote unit determines that a particular packet is intended for the remote unit, but can not determine the contents of the payload of the packet, the remote unit sends a retransmission request to the base station for retransmission of the symbol. The base station determines whether the entire symbol or merely the packet should be retransmitted, based on such considerations as the size of the packet or whether there are additional requests for the symbol. The invention allows both soft-symbol combining and Automatic Repeat Request to be used as error correction techniques.

    • Embodiments of the invention describe a method for antenna selection (AS) in a wireless communication network, the network comprising user equipment (UE), configured to transmit a sounding reference signal (SRS) from a subset of antennas at a time without transmitting user data. The method transmits a first SRS from a first subset of antennas in a first subframe, wherein the first subframe does not include the user data, and transmits a second SRS from a second subset of antennas in a second subframe, wherein the second subframe does not include the user data. After receiving, in response to the transmitting the first SRS and the second SRS, information identifying an optimal subset of antennas from the first subset of antennas and the second subset of antennas, the method selects the optimal set of antennas such that the optimal subset of antennas is selected without transmitting the user data.

    • Packets in a multi-hop wireless network are routed based on the available link throughputs, network node congestion and the connectivity of the network in a manner that minimizes the use of radio resources and minimizes delay for packets in multi-hop system. The routing method also avoids congestion in the access network, especially near the network access points as provided by network access nodes. Each wireless network node maintains a link table for storing link conditions and associated route costs. Packets are routed according to the low cost route. Subsequent wireless network nodes evaluate whether a lower cost route is available and, if so, route the data packet according to the lower cost route. Every wireless network node transmits the data packet, a specified route and a time stamp indicated a time of the last data entry in the link table that was used to calculate the low cost route.

    • A method allocates bandwidth from a radio frequency spectrum in a cellular network including a set of cells. Each cell includes a base station for serving a set of mobile stations in the cell. An area around each base station is partitioned into a center region and an edge region. In each base station, cell-center bandwidth for use by the mobile stations in the center region is reserved according to an inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC) protocol, and cell-edge bandwidth for use by the mobile stations in the edge region is reserved according to the ICIC protocol. The bandwidth can be fixed or adaptive to reduce the signaling overhead. The adaptive bandwidth can be further partitioned into reserved and the free bands. Mobile stations are classified as primary and secondary users, depending on whether they use or are assigned the fixed or adaptive band radio resources.
