    • A low capacity nuclear reactor with spherical fuel elements laid out in an underground configuration and characterized by a compact structure and the far-reaching elimination of active operating installations, such as a charging apparatus, gas purification installations and control systems. The reactor is particularly suitable for generation of heat for heating purposes. The graphite reflector surrounding the pile of fuel elements on all sides includes layers of spherical graphite elements with a diameter equal to that of the fuel elements. The poured part of the graphite reflector and the pile of fuel elements are located in a metal core vessel made of lattice work or perforated sheet metal and capable of supporting the entire weight of the graphite and fuel elements. The mesh or the holes of cage-like core vessel are smaller than the diameter of the spherical elements. Cylinder-like sleeves made of lattice work or perforated sheet metal are fastened to the inner wall of the core vessel, with absorber rods located in a displaceable manner in the sleeves. The core vessel is followed on top by a gas conduction jacket separating the suction and compression part of the cooling gas blower.

    • Disclosed is a nuclear power plant comprising a high-temperature pebble bed reactor contained in a cylindrical steel pressure vessel in which an upper part of the cylindrical steel pressure vessel, which contains a heat utilization system, is retracted and equipped with a cover upon which circulating blowers are placed. The heat utilization system comprises, in a known manner, a single steam generator. The steam generator comprises at least two sub-systems independent of one another, with their own distributors and collectors, and with their own inlet and outlet lines. A first shut-down arrangement comprises a plurality of absorber rods insertable into bores of the side reflector from above and comprises rod drives arranged outside the steel pressure vessel in the area of its retracted upper part. A second shut-down arrangement comprises small absorber spheres for introducing into the core of the reactor, and several storage containers and annular conduits for said spheres. The storage containers are also arranged outside the steel pressure vessel in the area of its retracted upper part. Annular conduits for the introduction of the small absorber sphere are, however, disposed inside the steel pressure vessel and connected with channels provided in projections of the side reflector protruding into the core.

    • A nuclear power plant with a gas cooled high temperature reactor, installed in a prestressed concrete pressure vessel with the operational and decay heat removal systems. The prestressed concrete pressure vessel has a thermal protection system, with a thermal insulating layer and a liner cooling system. The liner cooling system, which is includes water carrying cooling pipes, which along with intermediate heat exchangers and cooling water pumps make up a closed intermediate cooling loop used for removal of the decay heat in case a failure of the decay heat removal systems. The elements of the invention assure an adequate water flow for the removal of decay heat in the liner cooling system in any situation, i.e. such that the decay heat may also be removed by natural convection. These element insure a sufficient driving pressure differences and minimize pressure losses in the intermediate cooling loop.

    • A graphite roof reflector for a small, high temperature reactor is arranged under the hot gas collector space and is therefore exposed to high thermal and radiation loads. In order to make possible the satisfactory support over the entire operating life of the reactor, the roof reflector is assembled from a center part and an annular part, which are supported in a different manner. The annular part is supported on the side reflector of the reactor. The center part is suspended by means of tie rods from a cover located over the hot gas collector space. The tie rods are placed into bores of the cover through which cold gas flows.

    • A medium power, high temperature pebble bed nuclear reactor, which includes a means for introduction and withdrawal of operating elements. The installation is provided in such a way that it can be more economically built and operated. The installation includes several input stations above a prestressed concrete pressure vessel, and charging hatch blocks positioned on top of the prestressed concrete pressure vessel. The blocks include selectors through which the pebble-shaped operating elements, after traversing helical and meandering charging conduits, reach into the reactor core. The selectors and charging conduits are installed within armored ducts which penetrate the prestressed concrete pressure vessel. Similar armored ducts are provided for exit ducts for withdrawal of pebbles from the core, and a first common exit hatch block is connected to the exit ducts. The block is arranged within foundation walls which support the prestressed concrete pressure vessel. A second exit hatch block, which is connected to the first exit hatch block by a shielded exit hatch channel, is provided in a reactor protection building. The withdrawal station is arranged in a reactor auxiliary building and connected to the shielded exit hatch channel.
