    • An apparatus is provided for fixing a toner image to a substrate including: a fixing member having a central axis and inner and outer surfaces; a heating element disposed within the fixing member for generating energy in the form of heat to heat the fixing member; and a back-up member cooperating with the fixing member to define a nip with the fixing member for receiving a substrate such that a toner image carried by the substrate is heated while in the nip. The heating element may have a center axis and be positioned near the fixing member inner surface such that the heating element center axis is spaced from the fixing member central axis.

    • A method for controlling power to an electrical load using dual pulse width modulation (PWM) to minimize in-rush current to the electrical load, such as a heater element. An output from a power source, supplying an alternating current, is modulated by a first PWM control signal to provide a first modulated power level to the electrical load. The first modulated power level is modulated by a second PWM control signal to control power supplied to the electrical load at the first modulated power level. The first PWM control signal operates to control the number of half cycles of current in order to provide one-third, two-thirds or full cycle power. The second PWM control signal operates to define a duty cycle and period for providing the power defined by the first PWM control signal to the electrical load.

    • A fuser assembly and a method of controlling a temperature in a fuser assembly are provided. The fuser assembly comprises a heat transfer member, a heater to heat the heat transfer member, and a backup member. The heat transfer member and the backup member define a fusing nip. A first temperature setpoint corresponding to a first thermal load for the heat transfer member is defined. A second temperature setpoint corresponding to a second thermal load for the heat transfer member is defined. The heater is maintained at or near the first temperature setpoint during at least a substantial portion of the time when the heat transfer member is operating at the first thermal load. The heater is maintained at or near the second temperature setpoint during at least a substantial portion of the time when the heat transfer member is operating at the second thermal load.

    • Fuser heater element damage due to excessive heating power is prevented by estimating available power supply heating power for proper power control. The estimate is performed by applying a predefined portion of the heating power available from the power supply to the heater element. The predefined portion is determined so that the heater element will not be damaged even if the power supply is at the maximum voltage level of any power supply that may be encountered. The temperature of the heater element is measured, and, if below a predefined temperature, a heating power estimate is made. If not, the heater element is heated by applying power in accordance with a stored heating power estimate from the last heating power estimate. A heating power estimate is made each time the heating element is heated from a temperature below the predefined temperature.

    • A method of controlling throughput of media passing through a heat fixing device includes the steps of initially conveying media to the heat fixing device at a nominal interpage gap, and counting a number of substrates conveyed through the heat fixing device. After a predetermined number of substrates have been conveyed through the heat fixing device, a temperature related measurement is obtained at the heat fixing device; and the interpage gap is increased when the temperature related measurement is a predetermined value. The interpage gap may be increased a large amount for a temperature related measurement corresponding to a narrow media, and the interpage gap may be increased a small amount for a temperature related measurement corresponding to nearly narrow media. The temperature related measure is obtained from a temperature sensor located in spaced relation to a temperature sensor providing a signal for controlling power to a heater for the heat fixing device.

A corresponding method is provided.
