    • On a magnetic recording medium, M sets of burst patterns are formed along a direction of rotation of a substrate in each burst pattern region. Each burst pattern is formed so as to include two types of burst signal units that have an equal length along a radial direction of the substrate. In a predetermined range (2·M) centers in the radial direction of the burst patterns are present at intervals of (1/N) times the track pitch in the radial direction. The predetermined range has a length along the radial direction of (2M/N) times the track pitch. M or N is a natural number of two or higher. The two types of burst signal units are formed of non-recording regions and facing end parts in the radial direction of the first type of burst signal units and the second type of burst signal units are separated via recording regions.

    • In a magnetic recording medium including a servo pattern region having a servo pattern formed of a concave/convex pattern having convex portions and concave portions and a data recording region, the region having a data track pattern, the convex portions are formed in an address pattern region of the servo pattern region such that the maximum opening lengths, which are located in the respective same radius regions of the respective opening lengths along the rotating direction of a substrate of the concave portions constituting the concave/convex pattern are set to first lengths that are double the minimum opening lengths along the rotating direction of the concave portions in the respective same radius regions. With this arrangement, the magnetic recording medium can securely read a magnetic signal and has a servo pattern having excellent surface smoothness.

    • A magnetic recording medium having high reliability is provided, in which concave portions between recording elements formed as convex portions of a concavo-convex pattern are approximately completely filled with a non-magnetic material. The magnetic recording medium is a plate-like body including: a substrate; a recording layer that is formed in a predetermined concavo-convex pattern over the substrate and includes recording elements for recording information formed as convex portions of the concavo-convex pattern; and the non-magnetic material filling concave portions between the recording elements. Side faces of the recording elements are inclined to face a surface of the plate-like body on a side toward which the recording elements 16 project in the concavo-convex pattern. An inclination angle of the side faces of the recording elements with respect to a direction perpendicular to that surface is smaller than 90° and 5° or more.

    • On an information recording medium, a data track pattern and a servo pattern composed of a concave/convex pattern including a plurality of convex parts are formed on at least one surface side of a substrate and respective concave parts in the concave/convex pattern are filled with non-magnetic material. The concave/convex pattern that constructs the servo pattern is divided into a plurality of ring-shaped regions that are concentric with the data track pattern and has a unit convex part length along a direction of rotation of the substrate set in each ring-shaped region so that a value produced by dividing an average length of the unit convex part length in each ring-shaped region by a distance from a center of the data track pattern to the ring-shaped region decreases from ring-shaped regions in an inner periphery to ring-shaped regions in an outer periphery.

    • A magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus includes: a magnetic recording medium onto which servo information including position information is recorded by a plurality of concavo-convex patterns formed by a magnetic layer; a gate circuit that extracts a part of a reproducing signal of the concavo-convex patterns by removing an end of a signal corresponding to a concave portion or a convex portion of the concavo-convex patterns from the reproducing signal; a first integrator that obtains area integral of an extracted reproducing signal; and a second integrator that adds respective signals after area integral is obtained to each other to generate a position control signal for controlling a position of a magnetic head. Thus, the magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus can make an output of the position control signal larger and can perform positioning control for the magnetic head with high precision.
