摘要： An image forming system which is capable of preventing paper jam from occurring in a sheet processing apparatus to thereby maintain the stability of the system. An alignment plates of an alignment unit movable in a lateral direction each sheet are brought into abutment with opposite side edges of sheets stacked on the sheet stack unit to laterally align the sheets. A lateral registration sensor unit detects a lateral position of the sheet being conveyed. When the detected lateral position of the sheet is beyond a predetermined position, the CPU of the apparatus changes the standby positions of the alignment plates such that spacing therebetween in the lateral direction the sheet is widened by a predetermined amount, and extends the conveying interval of sheets in the image forming apparatus by a predetermined time period.

When the folded sheet bundle has been conveyed by a predetermined distance after a leading end of the sheet bundle has been detected and before the sheet bundle reaches a processing position, the holding unit starts holding the sheet bundle, and then the conveying units stops conveyance of the sheet bundle.

The sheet processing apparatus shifts a stapler along an edge of a sheet bundle. The stapler has a staple detection sensor attached thereto. The staple detection sensor detects a staple driven into the sheet bundle while passing by a staple detection position during shifting of the stapler. The stapler sequentially performs stapling at a first position and a second position along the edge of the sheet bundle, and is then shifted to a standby position. During a time period from completion of the stapling at the first position to completion of the shifting of the stapler to the standby position, the staple detection sensor detects presence or absence of a staple at each of the first position and the second position.

The third pressing roller moves in between the lower pressing plate and the upper pressing plate. The third pressing roller or the pressing unit moves so that the third pressing surface of the third pressing roller presses the fold end portion at a predetermined position based on a tip of the fold end portion. The fold end portion projects after the sheet bundle is held between the lower pressing plate and the upper pressing plate.

The conveying portion conveys the sheet. The moving portion moves the conveying portion in the sheet width direction to correct lateral registration of the sheet. The pressing portion presses an upstream end of the sheet in the sheet conveying direction and forms a second loop of the sheet to correct skew feeding. The sheet is positioned with reference to the pressing portion.
