    • Provided is a computer system which is capable of backup operation with a minimum count of volumes in a remote copy environment when a disaster or the like causes a storage system to stop working normally. The computer system has a host computer, a first storage system, a second storage system, and a management computer. The first storage system contains a data volume which stores data requested by an application to be written. The second storage system contains a mirrored volume to which data stored in the data volume is copied. The computer system is characterized by being configured to receive an input of a policy about backup processing executed in backup volumes and set a configuration of the first storage system and a configuration of the second storage system under the received policy.

    • The load of managing a storage system is lessened. In a storage system where multiple logical volumes are included in a logical volume group and a copy of the logical volume group is made in a pool area different from the one to which the logical volume group belongs, a management computer adds to the pool area capacity when the capacity of a pool area exceeds a predetermined threshold. When the pool area includes multiple logical volume groups, the management computer requests the storage system to create a pool area for each of the logical volume groups and to create the logical volume groups respectively for the created pool areas. When the pool area includes one logical volume group, the management computer requests the storage system to make the capacity of the pool area coincide with the capacity of a pool area to which the logical volume group is copied.

    • A discrepancy between a management range of a user on a management computer, and a management range of the user in a storage, is detected with respect to a volume held in the storage. Storage management information of the management computer stores a correspondence between an identifier of a volume group, and an identifier of the user. When a plurality of volumes are designated as a managed object of the user, the management computer references the storage management information, and obtains, from the storage, an identifier of the volume group to which the plurality of designated volumes belong. Next, the management computer references the storage management information, and determines whether or not the obtained volume group is in the management range of the same user.

    • A volume management method is proposed for setting at least a logical volume over a plurality of physical storage devices by taking requested performance of other volumes into consideration. The volume management method comprises the steps of: receiving a volume creation request specifying a requested storage capacity and requested average performance; forming a judgment as to whether or not there exists an unoccupied area satisfying the requested storage capacity throughout the storage devices; forming a judgment as to whether or not all volumes, which include existing volumes each sharing any of the storage devices with a volume to be created and the volume to be created, each satisfy its requested average performance by referring to information of requested average performance on a storage means for each of the existing volumes if the unoccupied area satisfying a requested storage capacity is determined to exist; and setting the volume to be created if all the volumes each satisfy the requested average performance.

    • Operation of an environment that supports both host-based replication and array-based replication is realized. According to the present invention, data in the first storage area is copied first to the second storage area using an array-based replication engine. In this case, the execution result of the replication is managed using a flag from which the copy timing can be known. In addition, data in the first storage area is copied to the third storage area using a host-based replication engine, and further, data in the third storage area is copied to the fourth storage area. Then, when data in the second storage area is restored to the first storage area, data in the fourth storage area is returned to the third storage area so that the third storage area has data of the same time as the second storage area (see FIG. 12).
