    • A computer-implemented method includes providing location factors for first phrases in a collection of phrases, where each location factor for a first phrase is associated with a likelihood that a second phrase of a search query is associated with a location when the first phrase and the second phrase are used in the search query. A search query is received, where the received search query includes a first phrase from the collection of phrases and a second phrase. Whether the second phrase of the received search query refers to a location is determined based, at least in part, on the location factor for the first phrase of the search query.

    • One embodiment provides a system of exchanging information between a first party and a second party over a network. The system includes an interface module to prompt a query from a first party by a first key word search and to prompt a query from a second party by a second key word search in the network, a key word comparator module to compare the first and second key word searches, and a chat room admission module to automatically admit the first and second parties to a chat room if the first and second key word searches have substantial similarity. The content-providing entity may determine a language of the input text based on several factors in combination: (a) the service provider's “market,” which is determined based on at least a portion of the URL of the Internet site to which the user directed his browser; (b) the user's “region,” which is determined based on the source Internet Protocol (IP) address of the IP packets that the user sends to the Internet site; (c) the “script” in which the short user-entered text is written; and (d) a statistical analysis of the frequency of the characters present in the short user-entered text.

    • A system, method, and computer readable medium for an operating system (OS) mediated launch of an OS dependent application is disclosed. An application running within an OS may operate outside an OS environment by constructing for example a capsule file, passing the capsule file to firmware interface, and restarting the system. The firmware interface may load various drivers and applications contained within the capsule file and execute them to perform a task. Upon completion of the task, the OS is booted again and the original application may resume control, making use of any information stored by the firmware interface in a dedicated status table or file. Other embodiments may be employed, and other embodiments are described and claimed.

    • A method and apparatus for performing multi-phase ranking of web search results by re-ranking results using feature and label calibration are provided. According to one embodiment of the invention, a ranking function is trained by using machine learning techniques on a set of training samples to produce ranking scores. The ranking function is used to rank the set of training samples according to its ranking score, in order of its relevance to a particular query. Next, a re-ranking function is trained by the same training samples to re-rank the documents from the first ranking. The features and labels of the training samples are calibrated and normalized before they are reused to train the re-ranking function. By this method, training data and training features used in past trainings are leveraged to perform additional training of new functions, without requiring the use of additional training data or features.

    • A problem checker architecture that monitors user progress during a problem-solving process and assists the user through the process (e.g., when requested) using common human methods of solving the problem. Assistance can be in the form of detecting errors during the process, and providing context-sensitive help information when the user gets stuck or makes a mistake. The problem checker can walk the user through the process of solving a math problem one step at a time allowing the user to learn to solve math problems according to a number of different methods. Rather than simply calculating and displaying the answer, the problem checker allows the user to attempt to solve math problems, providing direction only when asked and correction only when required. The problem checker can recognize multiple solution methods for many common math problems and guide the user to the solution via any of the methods.
