    • The invention is a method for mass analysis of polymers by mobility measurements of charge reduced ions generated by electrosprays of polymers using solvents having high dielectric constants. Polymer ions formed by electrospray carry a level of charge proportional to their length and hence their mass. The number of charges on the resulting polymer ions is reduced to unity in a radioactive source. The mobility distribution of the reduced charge polymer ions is then measured in a high resolution differential mobility analyzer (DMA). A relation Z(m) between the mobility Z of a polymer and its mass m is determined using narrowly distributed polymer mass standards. Polymers analyzed in accordance with the invention include both water soluble and water insoluble polymers having weight average molecular weights between 1 kilodaltons (kD) and 500,000 kD.

    • A pet watering device for use in a vehicle that has a basin with sidewalls, a bottom and a porous member mounted over the bottom, forming an upper and a lower chamber. The porous member permits the passage of water from the upper to the lower chamber but preferably does not permit the reverse flow of water there through. Water is pumped from the lower to the upper chamber, the amount being substantially equal to the water passing through the porous member and sufficient to maintain the presence of a thin, constant layer of water over the porous member. The device is securely mounted in the vehicle. When the watering device is jostled by the moving vehicle water does not pass from the lower to the upper chamber through the porous member and only a small amount, if any, of water slops out over the upper rim of the basin.

    • A video stream is provided to a set top box of a viewer to fulfill the viewer's request for a video on-demand service. The video stream is encoded at one of a plurality of encoding rates selected by a Service Quality Manager based on parameters defined for a service group, which in various embodiments may comprise the viewer, or the viewer along with other customers serviced by a single QAM. The parameters used for determining the encoding rate may involve currently allocated bandwidth, the viewer's service parameters, other customer's service parameters, and historical data regarding encoding rate selection data. The encoding rate used to encode a stream may be modified during streaming in response to other service requests. The encoding rate may be shifted based on anticipated service requests from other members in the service group.

    • Aspects relate to categorizing requests for online resources as originating from spiders or not. Such resources are associated with respective contacts, and if a non-spider requests a resource, then a contact associated with that resource can be notified. One example method for determining whether to notify a user associated with a network resource includes identifying, via a processor, an entity making a request for a resource associated with a network address, wherein the entity has extracted the network address from a machine-readable code. The method then includes serving the resource to the entity in response to the request. The method then includes determining if request is not abusive, and only if the request is not abusive sending a notification to a user associated with the resource that the resource has been accessed.

    • A user interface aids in creation of customized pre-defined queries that can be used for identifying particular search results relevant to a topic. Provision can be made to allow express inclusion or exclusion of certain results. Metrics relating to how much the pre-defined query focuses the search can be provided. A pre-defined query can be referenced by a URL, which can be distributed or referenced in content available in any number of locations. When results of the pre-defined search change, a contact associated with the search query can be notified. When a URL is activated, a redirect to the search engine with the customized query can occur, and the contact associated with the query can be notified of the usage of the pre-defined query. Metrics concerning sources of query usage can be produced, based on data gathered while serving the pre-defined query requests.
