    • A controller and ring generator circuit realized therefrom utilizing an open loop flyback topology to achieve a desired output voltage waveform. A characteristic feature of the controller is that it provides the required signals to control a ring generator circuit having an open loop fly back topology. The controller functions to generate a PWM signal that is used to switch the primary of a transformer on and off. The controller includes the necessary functionality to control the duty cycle of the generated PWM signal so as to produce a sine wave output on the secondary of the transformer. The controller also includes overcurrent protection circuitry that tracks the load current by sensing the current through the primary winding. In addition, the circuit permits negative current in the secondary by use of a synchronous rectifier circuit coupled to an additional secondary transformer winding. An output bridge circuit creates a full sine wave from the generated half wave output.

    • A method of power management for use in a local area network, in which a plurality of local area network nodes are supplied power over communication cabling, the method comprising: supplying power to the plurality of local area network nodes over communication cabling; inputting total power availability; monitoring total power consumption; establishing a first limit for the monitored total power consumption; establishing a second limit for the monitored total power consumption, the second limit being lower than the first limit; in the event the first limit is exceeded, disconnecting the supplied power to at least one of the plurality of local area network nodes; and in the event the second limit is exceeded, supplying power to an additional node only after disconnecting the supplied power to at least one of the plurality of local area network nodes.

    • A method and apparatus for preventing harmful transients resulting from a probing routine for a valid powered device detection signature in a network, the method comprising: operating power sourcing equipment to provide via its output port a pre-detection output voltage; obtaining an indication of the pre-detection output voltage; comparing the indication of the pre-detection output voltage with a pre-determined value; and in the event that the indication of the pre-detection output voltage is less than the pre-determined value; initiating a probing routine for a valid powered device detection signature. The higher voltage of the probing routine is thus not present at the output port in the absence of pre-detection of a potentially valid powered device detection signature.

    • A power supply subsystem configured for connection between a LAN switch and at least one node, the power supply subsystem providing electrical power to the at least node over communication cabling, the power supply subsystem comprising: a management and control unit; at least one port for connection to a LAN switch; a combiner combining power into the communication cabling substantially without interfering with data communication between the LAN switch and the at least one node; and current limiting circuitry controlling current of the power delivered into the communication cabling via the combiner, wherein the management and control unit is operative to interrogate the at least one node to which it is intended to transmit power over the communication cabling in order to determine whether the node's characteristics allow it to receive power over the communication cabling.
