    • A computer-implemented method, system, and program product for optimizing a distributed (software) application are provided. Specifically, a configuration of a target computing environment, in which the distributed application is deployed, is discovered upon deployment of the distributed application. Thereafter, based on a set of rules and the discovered configuration, one or more optimization techniques are applied to optimize the distributed application. In a typical embodiment, the set of rules can be embedded in the distributed application, or they can be accessed from an external source such as a repository. Regardless, the optimization techniques applied can include at least one of the following: (1) identification and replacement of an underperforming component of the distributed application with a new component; (2) generation of interface layers (to allow selection of optimal bindings) between distributed objects of the distributed application; and/or (3) execution of code transformation of the distributed application using program analysis techniques.

    • Several deterrence mechanisms suitable for content distribution networks (CDN) are provided. These include a hash-based request routing scheme and a site allocation scheme. The hash-based request routing scheme provides a way to distinguish legitimate requests from bogus requests. Using this mechanism, an attacker is required to generate O(n2)amount of traffic to victimize a CDN-hosted site when the site content is served from n CDN caches. Without these modifications, the attacker must generate only O(n) traffic to bring down the site. The site allocation scheme provides sufficient isolation among CDN-hosted Web sites to prevent an attack on one Web site from making other sites unavailable. Using an allocation strategy based on binary codes, it can be guaranteed that a successful attack on any individual Web site that disables its assigned servers, does not also bring down other Web sites hosted by the CDN.

    • Systems and methods are provided for assigning gateways for heterogeneous wireless mobile networks. A method includes exchanging routing and connectivity information between a plurality of nodes. Each node is respectively included in a corresponding one of a plurality of mobile ad hoc networks. The information excludes global positioning satellite information. The method further includes determining, for a given node, whether a particular set of gateway functionalities of the given node are redundant with respect to one or more other nodes, based on topology information derived from the information. The method also includes dynamically assigning the given node as a gateway or a non-gateway by respectively turning on or turning off the particular set of gateway functionalities of the given node when the particular set of gateway functionalities of the given node are respectively determined to be non-redundant or redundant with respect to the one or more other nodes.
