    • A Nip Forming Fuser Roll (NFFR) fuser. The fuser is constructed to be self-stripping, that is, the roll contacted by the substrate carrying the toner images is fabricated from a relatively thick elastomeric material which under pressure exerted through contact of the nip forming members is sufficiently strained as the substrate passes in and out of the nip that the fuser roll is self-stripping. An external source of energy in addition to an internal source is used for elevating the surface temperature of the fuser roll member contacted by the toner image carrying substrate. A shield is provided for precluding contact of the external heat source by the substrate in the event of a misstrip. The shield which is fabricated from an infrared radiation transmissive polymer material is supported in intimate contact with the heated fuser member to minimize the presence of oxygen for minimizing the possibility of substrate combustion.

    • A NFFR is disclosed which does not exhibit the phenomena of droop which can occur when the fuser switches from a standby to a run mode of operation. The elimination of droop is effected using an external heat source which together with an internal source of heat supplies heat to the surface of the heated fuser member to maintain its surface temperature at a preset standby value until such time as the fuser roll core reaches a temperature level sufficient to maintain the heated fuser member surface at a substantially constant temperature during standby and run modes of operation.

    • A heat and pressure roll fuser is disclosed for fixing powder images to various substrates. Each of the rolls has a deformable outer layer. One of the rollers is crowned such that its center has a larger diameter than its ends. The other roller has a uniform diameter along its entire length. The difference in the center diameter and the end diameters is such that the fuser produces a substantially uniform nip and a uniform nip velocity. A flared pressure roll is provided for controlling the speed of substrate edges to compensate for waviness along the substrate edges, such waviness being due to moisture picked up by the substrates while being stored prior to being used for duplex imaging.

    • An apparatus for minimizing fuser misstrips from a heat and pressure fuser in an electrophotographic printing machine. A plurality of sensors are provided to determine the basis weight of the copy sheet, the density of the image being transferred to the copy sheet and fused thereon, the relative humidity of the machine environment, the process speed of the print engine, etc. Signals indicative of all the variables are generated and sent to the machine controller which processes these signals and predicts when a fuser misstrip is likely to occur. Based on the likely degree of misstrip, a variety of actions are taken to prevent the misstrip. A stripper finger can be actuated to physically remove the sheet from the fuser member and/or the release agent management system can vary the amount of release agent applied to the fuser to assist in the removal of the copy sheet from the heated fuser member. The overall system provides the advantage of a varying amount of fuser release agent so that an extreme buildup of oil is not encountered, and further allows an intermittent stripper finger use to prevent premature wear of the fuser member by the constant pressure of a stripper finger.

    • A contact fuser assembly for use in an electrostatic reproducing apparatus including an internally heated fuser roll structure comprising a rigid or non-deformable, thermally conductive core capable of interacting with a material applied thereto in such a manner as to form a thermally-stable interfacial coating intermediate the surface of the core and a release coating also formed thereon. The interfacial coating strongly adheres to the core surface and prevents toner material from contacting the outer surface of the core. The combined coatings have a sub-micron thickness and therefore present a minimal thermal barrier to the energy being conducted outwardly by the core. The fuser assembly is characterized by the provision of means for controlling the interaction between the core and the material.

    • A temperature droop compensated NFFR fuser having a preheater structure which conveys the substrate carrying toner images past a radiant heat contained therein and then into the nip of a pair of pressure engaged fuser rollers that form the NFFR fuser. One of the fuser rollers is heated by an internal heater which is supplied a constant level of power which generally maintains the temperature of the heated roller to a temperature sufficient to fuse the toner images on the substrate. The preheater structure warms the substrate carrying toner images prior to entry into the nip of the fuser rollers to compensate for the temporary temperature droop of the fuser rollers that is encountered when the fuser moves from a standby mode to an operating mode. The combination of pre-warmed substrate and the temperature to which the heated fuser roller droops is sufficient to completely fuse the toner images on the substrate. With time in the operating mode, the fuser rollers recover from droop and the radiant heat source in the preheater structure is turned off.

The NFFR constructed according to the forgoing allows operation at a reduced set point temperature of 30.degree. to 40.degree. F. or in the alternative allowing for operation at a higher throughput speed at the higher set point temperature in lieu of operating at the lower set point temperature.
