    • A load having top and bottom caps is stretch wrapped at a wrapping station having turntable and a dispenser for dispensing stretch wrap packaging material, and a corner board placer for placing a corner board having tapered top and bottom edges on each corner of the load. With the load positioned on the turntable, the corner board placer is controlled by a controller to perform the steps of forming an acute angle between first and second portions of the corner board, and moving the corner board toward the corner until the first and second portions have been inserted between the top and bottom caps. The controller then causes the corner board placer to perform the steps of opening the corner board to substantially form a right angle, and simultaneously placing the first and second portions of the corner board proximate respective sides of the load by moving the corner board toward the corner in a direction oblique to the respective sides while maintaining the first and second portions generally parallel with the respective sides. A restrainer is provided for holding each corner board in place to allow subsequent corner board placement on another corner of the load. The turntable is rotated to wrap the load with the corner board placed on the corners of the load.

    • Stretch wrapping packaging material on a load includes introducing stretch wrap packaging material onto V shaped tips of projecting portions of a first grooved roller so that the packaging material spans the nonprojecting portions of the first grooved roller. The web of packaging material and the first grooved roller are transported in the direction generally parallel to the grooves. The web of packaging material spanning the nonprojecting portions of the first grooved roller is impinged with V shaped tips of projecting portions of a second grooved roller. The tips of the projecting portions of the second grooved roller are transported at a speed which is less than the speed of the tips of the projecting portions of the first grooved roller. The tips of the projecting portions of the second grooved roller moves at a speed which stretches the web between the first and second grooved surfaces in a direction transverse to the direction in which it is transported and minimizes any stretching of the web in the direction in which the web is transported. The web is stretched between the projecting portions of the first and second grooved rollers in a direction transverse to the direction in which the web is transported. The web is separated from the first and second grooved surfaces and wrapped onto a load by providing relative rotation between the load and a dispensing mechanism for the web.

    • A film web is dispensed from a film web dispenser and wrapped around a bundle by moving the bundle into an applicator mandrel, revolving the film web dispenser relative to the applicator mandrel, dispensing the film web from the film web dispenser on to the applicator mandrel at a constant supply speed. The film web, wrapped around the applicator mandrel, is transported beyond the downstream end of the applicator mandrel, the bundle is moved beyond the downstream end of the applicator mandrel and the film web is applied from the applicator mandrel onto the bundle so as provide a containment force in the film web after it is applied onto the bundle. A dual stage wrapping system is used in such a manner that each orbiting dispenser is restrained to dispense the film web at a constant supply speed less than the lowest film demand speed at the applicator mandrel and independent of the tension on the film web between the film web dispenser and the applicator mandrel. The applicator mandrel is positioned to resist crushing or disalignment of the bundle or subunits of the bundle within the applicator mandrel and also modifies its position to modify the wrapping cross-section of the bundle so that the web strain elongation varies substantially within a linear wrap force range above the yield point of the stress strain characteristics of the film web between the film web dispenser and the applicator mandrel.

    • A stretch wrapping system including apparatus and process is disclosed in which rotation of a non-cylindrical or off-centered load draws film web at a continually fluctuating speed from a film roll through a prestretching device to wrap the load. The prestretching device includes an upstream roller coupled to a braking device and a downstream roller coupled to a positive torque device. The speed of the downstream roller is proportional to the take-up speed of the web on the load and the feedback device continually senses the speed of both rollers and adjusts the braking device so that the speed ratio of the rollers produces a constant stretch of the film web above its yield point. The feedback device also continually senses the forces contributed by the braking device and the torque device and continually adjusts the torque device so that the force on the web between the downstream roller and the load is held constant at a level below the yield point of the web. The feedback device may be connected to display systems to display the amount of web stretch, the web force to the load, and the amount of film web consumed in a wrapping operation.

    • An apparatus for applying stretchable plastic film to loads for containment of the loads using two frictionally connected rollers which are held together and driven by the film web at different speeds to elongate the plastic film beyond its yield point. After the elongated film has been stretched, it is wrapped around a rotating load. The rollers are cammed apart during the beginning of the wrap so that relatively untensioned film is wrapped around the load at the beginning of the wrap. The cam force is then released and the rollers are pulled together in frictional engagement by the film web being pulled off of the film roll to stretch the film web.

    • An apparatus and process for automatically making a spiral wrapped unitary package having a ring type or tied closure. In the apparatus a series of loads, each containing a plurality of units are fed one load at a time onto a turntable adjacent a material dispenser with the leading edge of the material from the dispenser being formed into a rope-like configuration by a roper mechanism and held by a clamp mechanism mounted on the turntable. The material is opened to its full web width, stretched and is spirally wrapped around the load at which time it is again formed into another rope-like configuration by the roper mechanism, and is positioned adjacent the leading edge where it is mechanically joined to the leading edge of the material by a ring type or tied closure. The roped material is then released from the clamp mechanism mounted on the turntable and the material is allowed to return to its memory position. The clamp mechanism again clamps the leading edge for the next load and the material is severed from the wrapped load.

    • An automatic wrapping machine comprising a film roll support adapted to hold a roll of film, a turntable adapted to hold a load of unitary members positioned adjacent to the film roll support, a drive apparatus to rotate the turntable and a brake adapted to place tension on the film web of the roll of elastic stretchable material carried in the roll support. A clamp assembly is mounted adjacent to the load to hold the film while the turntable with associated load rotates allowing film to wrap around the load and the clamp assembly. The clamping assembly includes a pneumatic device for activating the clamp after the completion of at least one revolution of turntable so that the clamping assembly is retracted from the film overwrap. A film cutting and clamping mechanism is located adjacent to the turntable to cut the film web after the load is wrapped and holds the free end of the film in a secured position. The holding clamp subsequently clamps around the film to hold the same in position for the wrapping of the next load after it is in position.
