    • A method for implementing call re-establishment using a user equipment (UE) configured to communicate with a wireless communication network includes detecting at least one of a radio link failure and a protocol failure of a connection between the UE and a serving cell. A target cell of the wireless communication network is selected and a received signal level for the target cell is compared to a signal level threshold. When the received signal level for the target cell exceeds the signal level threshold, call re-establishment is initiated on the target cell. The signal level threshold may be encoded within a system information type 21bis message, or a system information element. In some cases, the signal level threshold is equal to a minimum signal level required on the target cell.

    • A system and method for redirecting data from a host system (or messaging server) to one or more mobile data communication devices via a wireless packet data network is provided in which the wireless packet data network dynamically assigns addresses to the one or more mobile data communication devices on an as-needed basis. A redirector application operating at the host system is configured by each user to continuously redirect certain data to the wireless packet data network, as the data is received (or otherwise altered) at the host system. Two methods are provided for communicating the redirected data from the network to the mobile device. In a first method, the mobile device is configured to periodically contact a store-and-forward server within the wireless network, which, when contacted, assigns a network address to the mobile device and then transmits the stored, redirected data to the mobile device. In a second method, the network transmits a connection request command to the mobile device via a parallel voice network, or via a command channel, or other type of low-bandwidth data channel. The mobile device then contacts the data network and requests a network address so that the store-and-forward server can send the redirected data to the mobile device.

    • One illustrative method for use in efficiently establishing a data connection, such as a Packet Data Protocol (PDP) Context, between a mobile station and a wireless communication network includes the steps of causing at least one data connection request to be transmitted to the wireless network in attempt to establish a data connection between the mobile station and the wireless network; setting a delay timer to an initial value and running the delay timer; if the data connection has not been established in response to transmitting the at least one data connection request, causing at least one subsequent data connection request to be transmitted after expiration of the delay timer set to the initial value; setting the delay timer to a subsequent initial value which is greater than the initial value and running the delay timer; and if the data connection has not been established in response to transmitting the at least one subsequent data connection request, causing at least one other subsequent data connection request to be transmitted after expiration of the delay timer set to the subsequent initial value. This technique continues until the data connection is established with the wireless network, if at all. If a new wireless network is selected during the technique, the process is reset such that the first initial value is again utilized first for the delay timer. Preferably, the technique works in combination with relatively more quick retries implemented in lower radio layer(s) (i.e. the physical, data link, or network layer). Thus, each data connection request may be a plurality of data connection retries which are performed much closer together in time than other retry attempts.
