    • A multi-cylinder compressor of the type suitable for use in a vehicle air-conditioning system includes a pair of axially spaced cylinder blocks for receiving a refrigerant fluid therein for compression. First and second sets of pistons are respectively reciprocated within the front and the rear cylinders, respectively by means of first and second sets of rods of different axial lengths. Also disclosed is an improved lubricating system for a compressor which includes a flapper element located near the oil hole to direct oil to the shaft seal for both clockwise and counterclockwise rotation of the compressor. The compressor may also include a slanted surface on the cam rotor for splashing oil onto the compressor housing wall.

    • A scroll-type fluid displacement apparatus, in particular, a compressor unit is disclosed. The unit includes a housing with a fluid inlet port and a fluid outlet port. A fixed scroll with first end plate and first spiral element is fixedly disposed in the housing. An orbiting scroll with a second end plate and a second spiral element is disposed for orbiting motion in the housing. The first and second spiral elements interfit with one another at an angular offset to make a plurality of line contacts to define at least one pair of sealed off fluid pockets. A drive pin extends from an inner end of a drive shaft. The orbiting scroll has a boss which rotatably supports a bushing. An eccentric hole is formed in the bushing and the drive pin is received within this hole. The center of the drive pin is located on an opposite side to the center of the drive shaft with regard to a straight line, which passes through the center of the bushing and is perpendicular to a connecting line passing through the center of the drive shaft and the center of the bushing. The center of the drive pin also is beyond the connecting line in the direction of rotation of the drive shaft. The bushing has a balance weight for cancelling a centrifugal force which arises because of the orbiting motion of the scroll member and bushing. Dynamic balance is accomplished by the use of a pair of balance weights affixed to the drive shaft for generating a moment of the same amount, but opposite in direction, to the moment generated by a force due to the interaction of the centrifugal force of the orbiting parts and the first balance weight.

The compressor comprises a front end plate member and a cylindrical casing attached to an end surface of the front end plate member. A polygonal shaped portion is formed on the outer peripheral surface of the front end plate member and a plurality of projections are formed on an opposite end of the housing from the polygonal shaped portion. The end surfaces of the projections are aligned on the same plane with each end surface of polygonal shaped portion. The end surfaces of the projections and the polygonal shaped portion have tapped holes for attaching mounting brackets. Therefore, a variety of suitable mounting arrangements can be used to mount the compressor and the mounting angle of the compressor can be adjusted.

    • A reciprocating piston type refrigerant compressor includes a compressor housing having a cylinder block provided with a plurality of cylinders and a crank chamber adjacent the cylinder block. A piston slides within each cylinder and is reciprocated by a wobble plate driven by a cam rotor mounted on a drive shaft. The cam rotor includes an adjustable slant plate with a sloping surface at an adjustable slant angle in close proximity to the wobble plate. Accordingly, the stroke of the pistons within the cylinders can be changed by adjusting the slant angle of the sloping surface. The slant angle of the sloping surface is adjusted in response to the change of pressure in the crank chamber. The crank chamber communicates with the suction chamber through a passageway and a valve control mechanism controls the opening and closing of the passageway. Thus, the capacity of the compressor of the present invention can be adjusted by changing the slant angle of the sloping surface of the slant plate in response to operation of the valve control mechanism.

    • A scroll-type fluid displacement apparatus is disclosed having a pair of scroll members each comprising an end plate and a spiral wrap extending from one side of the end plate. The spiral wraps interfit at an angular and radial offset to make a plurality of line contacts to define at least one pair of sealed-off fluid pockets. At least one of the scroll members has a discharge port or fluid hole near the center of the spiral element and is provided with an anti-wear plate on its end surface facing the other scroll member. The anti-wear plate is an involute plate that covers substantially the area of the end surface of the end plate on which the spiral wrap of the other scroll member makes contact during the orbital motion of the orbiting scroll member. The radially inner end of the anti-wear plate is spaced from the discharge port to avoid blocking the discharge flow or covering the discharge port. Therefore, the undesirable vibration of the anti-wear plate by fluid flowing through the port is avoided.

    • In a scroll type fluid compressor having an orbiting scroll member and a fixed scroll member which form at least one pair of outer fluid pockets and a central pocket therebetween for fluid compression, the axial end surfaces of each spiral element of the scroll members have a groove along the spiral curve. At least one closed portion is located along the groove to block fluid flow in the groove. A seal element is loosely fitted in the groove. During operation the compressed fluid flows into the groove to urge the seal element against the end plate of the opposite scroll member so that the axial sealing between the spiral element and the end plate is assured without leakage of fluid along the groove. Also, the closed portion is located along the spiral element at the location where the line contact point where the outer fluid pockets and the central pocket merge to prevent back pressure changes from causing excessive wear of the seal element.

    • A scroll type fluid displacement apparatus is disclosed. The apparatus includes a housing. A fixed scroll member is fixedly disposed within the housing and comprises a first end plate means from which a first wrap means extends. An orbiting scroll member comprises a second end plate means from which a second wrap means extends, and is supported for orbiting motion within the housing. Both wrap means interfit at an angular and radial offset to make a plurality of line contacts to define at least one pair of symmetrically disposed, sealed off fluid pockets. The first end plate means is formed with two holes which are placed at symmetrical positions to be simultaneously closed by the axial end surface of the second wrap means. These two holes are connected to one another by a passage means. The pressure in the sealed off fluid pockets is thereby equalized at the time the pockets are sealed.

    • A refrigerant compressor having pistons reciprocated in respective cylinder by a wobble plate driven by an input rotor which is secured on a drive shaft, which compressor has a reduced volume and an improved lubricant system. An end plate of a housing for the compressor supports and bears the drive shaft and is formed with an oil port extending from a shaft seal cavity mounting a shaft seal of the drive shaft to a gap between the end plate and the rotor, with the drive shaft being formed with another oil port extending the shaft seal cavity and a gap between the rotor and the wobble plate whereby the lubricant oil flows through the gap between the rotor and the wobble plate, the oil port in the drive shaft, the shaft seal cavity, the oil port in the end plate, and the gap between the rotor and the end plate in the order. The rotor is formed with an annular recess on a surface thereof facing the end plate and in eccentricity from the rotating axis of the rotor. A valve plate secured between a cylinder block and a cylinder head is formed of a thin ground steel plate or a thin metal plate used for a spring and is formed with discharge and suction openings by punching. The cylinder head is formed with suction and discharge chambers partitioned with a partition wall means which has sharp end projections formed on an end surface thereof to bite into a gasket between the end of the partition wall and the valve plate to firmly secure the gasket. Two service valves are provided on a side surface of the housing which are communicated with the suction and discharge chambers, respectively, of the cylinder head through a hole extending in the cylinder block and the valve plate.
