    • Disclosed herein are a single-stage backlight inverter and a method for driving the same. The single-stage backlight inverter comprises a main oscillator for generating a predetermined triangle-wave oscillation signal, a predetermined clock signal and an inverted clock signal, and an output drive controller responsive to the triangle-wave oscillation signal, clock signal and inverted clock signal from the main oscillator and first and second reference voltages set therein. The second reference voltage has a level set to an intermediate level of the triangle-wave oscillation signal. The output drive controller is adapted to generate a first drive control signal and generate a second drive control signal. The inverter further comprises a first output unit for outputting a pair of first switching signals in response to the first drive control signal, and a second output unit for outputting a pair of second switching signals in response to the second drive control signal.

    • A charge pump circuit for charging/pumping charge into/out of a charge pumping capacitor. Charge is pumped from the capacitor to turn on one of a pair of MOSFET transistors formed in an integrated circuit for driving a load. The MOSFET transistors are connected at a node in series with one another. The charging capacitor has one end connected at the node and the other connected through a diode to one side of a power supply which is also applied across both transistors. An input signal turns the MOSFETs on and off in a complementary fashion. Each MOSFET has a gate which is discharged to ground when the MOSFET is turned off. A zener diode prevents the capacitor from pumping excess charge to the gate of the MOSFET to which it is connected. Another zener diode prevents damage resulting from excessive voltage external to the integrated circuit.

    • In an FSC mode LCD, a controller operates in response to an external adjustment, and a DC/DC converter converts a battery voltage into a driving voltage under control of the controller. A color LED backlight includes first, second and third color LED arrays connected in parallel, which are operated by the driving voltage. An FSC generator generates first, second and third color PWM signals according to an internal sawtooth voltage and a dimming voltage. A 3-channel current source generates first, second and third driving currents under control of the controller, and on/off switches paths of the first, second and third driving currents flowing through the first, second and third color LED arrays according to the first, second and third color PWM signals generated from the FSC generator, thereby adjusting luminance of the first, second and third color LED arrays of the color LED backlight.

In the driving circuit, a controller supplies a first driving signal. A level shifter provides a second driving signal. A first delay circuit delays a rising section of the first driving signal to provide the first driving signal. A second delay circuit delays a falling section of the second driving signal to provide the second driving signal. Also, a power switching circuit is provided. The inverter driving circuit for the LCD, when a switching device thereof is turned off, has less current flowing in the switching device, thereby generating less heat. In addition, the inverter driving circuit prevents heat generation caused by current flowing reversely in the switching device, thereby enhancing drive efficiency.
