    • A system for detecting missing or superimposed sheets fed to a sheet processing machine uses a measuring device for generating a signal increasing with the number of superimposed sheets and an evaluating device for emitting an electrical signal when irregularities occur. A pulse transmitter is synchronized to the sheet feed mechanism and operates to emit an initial and final pulse timed to the sheet feed. Electronic storage is reset upon the initial pulse, and operates to integrate values of the measured signal until the final pulse is received. Upon receipt of the final pulse, the stored value is compared to a reference value to detect any irregularities. Preferably a microcomputer is used for signal processing.

    • To prevent uncontrolled movement or flutter of a trailing end of a sheet being removed by a chain conveyor from a delivery drum (7) of a printing system (1), the sheets are gripped by grippers (10) connected to cross struts (9) of two chains (8), and engaged by sheet engaging brushes (19, 22) or rollers or ducts (30, 34) with differential pressure application, such as compressed air, to urge the sheets against a sheet guide vane (13) or strip. The cams may be secured to the gripper structures in the form of cam curves (11), engaged by cam followers (17, 22) which pivot or tilt cross rods (15, 20) to lift the brushes off the sheets; or a cam (25; FIG. 2) can be placed on the delivery drum, controlling cam followers (27, 31) which, over a linkage, lift off the engagement elements (30, 34) when the grippers come therebeneath, but permit engagement thereof when the grippers have passed, to control movement of the trailing portions of the sheet.

    • An arrangement for the transfer and conveyance of sheets between first and second printing units of a multi-color lithographic press which includes a receiving drum in the first printing unit, a feed drum in the second printing unit, impression cylinders associated with the drums, an endless chain, which includes links joined by pins, trained about the drums, and a guide rail following the path of the chain. Each gripper carriage includes a yoke for snugly embracing the drive roller on the chain. The feed drum includes a radially mounted drive fork for engaging the cam roller of each gripper carriage as it comes into the vicinity of the feed drum in order to achieve a condition of accurate register between the feed drum and the gripper carriage. Each yoke is resiliently mounted with respect to its carriage to permit slight accommodating movement of the carriage along the direction of the chain so that each carriage is sequentially in a phase position which is dependent only upon the phase position of the feed drum for accurately phased transfer of the sheet with respect to the associated impression cylinder.

    • An arrangement for securing pure skew adjustment of a cylinder, for example, a plate cylinder in a sheet-fed rotary printing press relative to an adjacent blanket cylinder. A bearing assembly at one end of the plate cylinder includes a cylinder bearing telescoped over the shaft and having flat support surfaces thereon facing radially outward in opposite directions. A guide bearing having a cylindrical outer surface is formed with a central window for receiving the cylinder bearing. The window defines a pair of flat inwardly facing way surfaces spaced parallel to one another for snug reception of the flat support surfaces on the cylinder bearing. The window also defines side walls spaced sufficiently to permit freedom of adjustment of the cylinder bearing along the way surfaces. An eccentric sleeve is fitted between the guide bearing and the frame with means for rockably adjusting the same to move the plate cylinder toward and away from the blanket cylinder thereby to vary the impression. A second adjustment is interposed between the cylinder bearing and the frame for locating the cylinder bearing in a desired position along the way surfaces thereby to adjustably skew the plate cylinder with respect to the blanket cylinder. A key anchored to the frame is provided for holding the guide bearing in a phase position in which the way surfaces therein are constantly oriented perpendicular to a plane which normally contains the axes of the cylinders, notwithstanding the rocking movement of the sleeve.

    • An ink fountain including a frame defining a horizontal slot adjacent the fountain roller. Arranged side by side in the slot is a metering assembly in the form of a series of flat slides each having a cam assembly at its rear end for adjusting the position of the slide with respect to the fountain roller thereby to meter ink in predetermined thickness in respective zones. Each slide is formed of a body having secured thereto a rectangular tip portion formed of resilient plastic. The rectangular tip portion of each slide is relieved in the region just behind the spring metal blade to permit the blade to flex broadwise resiliently and accommodatingly when the slide is advanced to bring the edge of the blade against the surface of the fountain roller thereby to achieve a seal between the blade and the fountain roller with only limited reaction force being exerted between them.
