    • An eddy current fan drive cooling system is operable in a vehicle having a sheave rotating at a speed related to an engine speed. A driving assembly of the cooling system is attached to the sheave. A plurality of poles are exposed around an outer perimeter of the driving assembly. A plurality of windings are wrapped around the poles. The windings are electrically connected to receive a driving signal to generate a magnetic field around the poles. A driven assembly carrying a cooling fan is provided around the driving assembly. The driven assembly includes a plurality of concentric rings arranged around the exposed poles of the driving assembly. An eddy current torque is produced in the rings in response to magnetic flux passing through the rings from the exposed poles due to the magnetic field around the poles.

    • An apparatus (10) for controlling the transmission of rotational forces between first (14) and second (66) members through an axially shiftable friction element (56) that rotates in unison with the first member (14) and can be selectively brought into engagement with the second member (66) is provided with a forced air cooling system that functions to cool the interface between the friction element (56) and the second member (66), as well as a first bearing (54) allowing relative rotation between the friction element (56) and an actuation member (38). A flow of cooling air is developed during operation of the apparatus by fins (172,174) formed about an outer radial surface portion of the friction element (56) and the air is caused to flow through enlarged lobe cut-out sections (156) in the second member (66) along the interface and through holes (164) formed in the friction element (56) which are arranged opposite the first bearing (54). The apparatus also incorporates a power transfer assembly that is extends directly adjacent an additional rotatable support bearing (30,80) that is mounted directly adjacent an end portion (16,18) on the first member (14). The power transfer assembly includes a coupling unit (102,137) which interconnects a power transfer member (88,126) to the end portion (16,18) of the first member (14) by developing a radial clamping force therebetween, while also functioning to axially retain the additional bearing (30,80) without inducing axially stresses on the additional bearing (30,80) during operation of the apparatus (10).

    • A device (10) is disclosed for intercepting the input of a system (23) of an internal combustion engine (12) normally provided to a solenoid valve (22) for actuating a fan clutch (20) when rotation of a fan (16) is desired. The input is received by terminals (42, 43) and is conditioned and passed on to a timer (96) and a controller (97). A vacuum switch (24) senses whether the fan (16) is rotating and provides a second input to the controller (97). In the event that an input is provided by the system (23) and the time delay signal has been provided by the timer (96) and also in the event that an input is provided by the system (23), the time delay has expired, and the second input is provided by the vacuum switch (24), the controller (97) provides an actuation output to terminals (71, 73) connected to the solenoid valve (22) by use of actuation provisions (98) to actuate the fan clutch (20). After the time delay signal is no longer provided by the timer (96), the actuation output is interrupted to the fan clutch (20) if one or both of the first and second inputs are interrupted. Thus, device (10) interrupts the actuation of the fan clutch (20) in the event that the fan (16) is unable to rotate for any reason and thereby provides overheating protection for the fan clutch (20).

    • Rotational control apparatus in the preferred forms of fan clutches (A, A') are shown including an eddy current drive (224). Specifically, the eddy current drive (224) includes a plurality of permanent magnets (226) mounted circumferentially spaced and with alternating polarity by a holder (228) to the input of the clutch (A, A') and a magnetically conductive ring (242) mounted to the output of the clutch (A, A'). Thus, the output portion and the fan blades mounted thereto are driven at engine speeds when the clutch (A, A') is air actuated and are driven at a rotational speed less than engine speed by the eddy current drive (224) when the clutch (A, A') is not air actuated and without separate controls for the eddy current drive (224). In preferred forms, a housing (62) comprises the output portion of the clutch (A) which is rotatably mounted by a bearing (58) to the hub portion (24) of a friction disc (28) which comprises the input portion of the clutch (A). In another preferred form, the output portion of the clutch (A') is in the form of a hub (20') rotatably mounted on a stationary shaft (24') and the input portion is in the form of a sheave (50') rotatable relative to the hub (20') and the shaft (24'). Additionally, the hub (20') can be braked by rotatably relating the hub (20') to the shaft (24'). In one of the preferred forms, the friction ring (252) includes peripheral gear teeth (256) in slideable gearing relation with gear teeth (250) formed in the housing (62) and is formed of fiber brake material to act as a dampener between the friction disc (28) and the housing (62) to absorb torsional vibration.
